A man in Maryland, right after his mother was hospitalized following a fall, found out that she had been romantically scammed out of $50,000. He has since taken a tough love approach to help her move forward and leave this chapter of her life behind, which is easier said than done.
TikTok user i_garnish_wages shared the clip online. Before posting the clip attached above, he posted a variety of content, but his mother’s romantic scam became his biggest series ever. The first video garnered 415,1000 views, 42,600 likes, and more than 700 comments.
The Maryland man wrote in his clip’s description that his mother had been hospitalized after she fell for the seventh time in just two weeks. The woman lay in a hospital bed and had a black eye, demonstrating the injuries she sustained from the fall. While hospitalized, the man got hold of his mother’s phone, and he decided to confront her about what he found.
According to the man, his mother had fallen into a year-long romantic scam, with the ones responsible apparently being from Ghana. In total, the woman, a widow, through gift card purchases, had lost approximately $50,000. So, to counter this, the man decided to delete her WhatsApp account, block the contact, and even contact the FBI.
“I deleted your account from WhatsApp, and you’re never speaking to that scammer again,” the man told his mother. She replied, still in denial, “He’s not a scammer.” He insisted he was, and then decided to confront her on other troubling facts.
Apparently, in exchange for the gift cards, the scammer had sent the man’s mother checks. These, according to him, were fraudulent. So, when the woman tried to pass them at Bank of America, her account was closed.
Troubling Findings
Furthermore, in a follow-up clip, the man told his mother she had not paid her mortgage for the past 10 months, as all the money she got was immediately sent to her faux lover, who apparently needed help fixing their “boat.”
“I’m doing this because you’re my mom, but it is so sad and disgusting that you got this scammed and you believe it,” the man told his mother. “You’re so smart, but now you’re in a situation where you’ll lose your house because of this.”
Finally, in a third clip, the Maryland man shared a ledger he had found of all the gift cards his mother had purchased for the scammer. So far, the woman’s family has found 97 gift cards.
Additionally, the man showed an email from a supposed doctor giving her an update on the person the woman was supposedly talking to, and even a marriage certificate. The certificate had the logo of BP, a British multinational oil and gas company.
Reactions
The clips sparked multiple responses.
Most viewers were shocked by the details surrounding the romantic scam. One said, “Please have the police talk to her. She may listen to an authority figure.” Another one commented, “I’m so sorry….this breaks my heart. She must be lonely.”
Other viewers shared their own stories involving family members falling into these sorts of traps. One wrote, “My father-in-law lost everything and decided to opt out on a Tuesday.” Another one added, “My mom lost almost a million dollars to a scammer.”
According to the Maryland man, all described above is only the beginning. Apparently, he plans to share more about his mother’s scamming case in the hopes of raising awareness. That way, fewer adults will fall for these types of scams.
