A Massachusetts influencer with millions of followers announced that she was getting a divorce. She had to shut down comments after receiving a significant amount of backlash, with her being accused of faking her accent to appear more relatable and many saying she was being performative.
The influencer in question is Mikayla Nogueira, a makeup content creator with over 17.4 million followers on TikTok. In an atypical, more serious video compared to the rest of her content, Mikayla announced that her marriage to Cody, her husband, was coming to an end.
“I wanna start this video by saying I appreciate you and I love you, and you’re gonna wanna sit down for this video,” she said. “I’m getting a divorce. Take a minute. Take it in. I’m getting a divorce.”
The Massachusetts woman went on to explain that the decision was made in 2025. Despite their divorce, Mikayla and Cody still love each other, and she asked her followers not to pick sides. Then, she brought up Cody’s struggles with addiction, clarifying that the divorce had nothing to do with that, requesting people not to bring it up while talking about the announcement.
Most likely, Mikayla expected a wave of support. However, she got the exact opposite, as many people called her out for the way she announced such a life-changing decision. TikTokers like daadisnacks or l1vr0se went viral for pointing out how performative she sounded, asking her followers to “sit down” or to “take a minute.”
Fake Accent, Reactions
Daadi, in particular, made special emphasis on how the Massachusetts influencer pronounced the word “start” like “staht.” He said that Mikayla was “selectively leaning into her Boston accent” to appear relatable to her audience. Daadi even went back to one of her videos in which she said the word “start” normally.
Many also pointed out that Mikayla’s divorce announcement was followed by a “barrage” of clearly advertised makeup TikToks, displaying a clear dissonance compared to her more serious clip. In one instance, she even said, “You don’t need a man on Valentine’s Day.”
The backlash was so intense that Mikayla disabled comments in most of her TikToks, only allowing those whom she follows back to comment on her latest ones. Users, however, rushed to comment on clips where people called her out.
“Who follows these people?” one user asked. Another one joked, “Use code DIVORCE for 30% off.” A third commenter added, “She overestimates her role in my life.”
Other than attempting to silence criticism, the Massachusetts woman has yet to address the fallout of her divorce announcement.
