. While some of them might still be thinking about gas prices and other woes, a new one has arrived, affecting an entire region. Today, the government of Massachusetts declared a critical drought across the entire Northeast Region of the state, including Essex, Middlesex, and Suffolk Counties. After residents learned of this, they began expressing their concerns, believing that many establishments and people across the state are wasting water, thereby causing these droughts to become more dangerous.
The information comes from the official Massachusetts Government website, and it found its way to the state’s subreddit. According to the current report, the Northeast Region of Massachusetts is in a critical drought condition. The report mentions the abovementioned counties, as well as the Town of Brookline, as part of this region, meaning these will be the most affected due to this.
Apparently, all other regions remain at their normal drought levels, with the Western, Southeast, Cape, and Dukes County being in a Mild Drought, while the Connecticut River Valley, Central, and Nantucket County reach a Significant Drought category.
With the information out, the government has urged citizens to minimize water use, stop non-essential outdoor watering, fix leaks immediately, and reduce shower times, among other recommendations. And while some residents believe these are good short-term solutions, some are concerned, but also angry, as they believe the state could have prevented this if certain places were more mindful about water use.
Massachusetts Residents React to Current Drought Conditions
Several Massachusetts Redditors saw the information and started leaving some comments expressing concern, but most of all, blaming certain places and authorities for not doing anything to prevent the drought in the Northeast Region.
“Golf courses average 10 to 20 MILLION GALLONS A YEAR.“
“The biggest offenders are golf courses.“
Others, however, have also claimed that the weather hasn’t been too favorable to Massachusetts citizens, as rain has only come around for a while, then leaves several cities after a couple of drops.
“It is weird. When we see bands of rain on the radar, they dissipate before they hit us. Very frustrating.“
In the end, there is no way to avoid the drought now, so all that remains is preparing, following the recommendations, and just hoping that a few rainy days arrive soon.
