Massachusetts Sen. Elizabeth Warren Wins Over Critics After Calling Out Private Equity Fast-Food Buyouts: ‘We Rarely Agree but This Time She Is Spot On!’

Finally someone said it out loud

Massachusetts Sen. Elizabeth Warren criticized private equity ownership of major restaurant chains, arguing that buyouts can erode food quality. She focused on Jersey Mike’s, linking customer complaints about portions and ingredients to Blackstone’s acquisition. The criticism gained attention because Warren extended the argument across several familiar chains and called for stronger action against private equity.

Warren shared the argument in a video posted online titled “Why Food Chains Taste Worse (And Costs More).” She opened by asking why food at familiar chains no longer tastes the same. Jersey Mike’s became her central example.

She noted the sandwich chain announced Blackstone’s $8 billion deal in November 2024. Warren argued that private equity firms buy businesses, add debt, cut costs and direct profits to investors. She questioned whether that model explained complaints about smaller portions, lower-quality ingredients and higher prices at Jersey Mike’s.

“One has to ask, is this what is happening with Jersey Mike’s?” Warren said. The video then showed the company’s CEO discussing 20 years of positive same-store sales growth. He also described plans to expand through franchise partners in the United States and overseas.

Warren broadened her criticism to Panera, Subway and other restaurant chains with private equity ownership. She also cited bagel chains and clothing brands as examples of the same pattern. Her criticism centered on product quality, worker pay, staffing and benefits.

She closed by urging collective action against what she called private equity’s “cash grab.” “You shouldn’t be left holding the smaller sandwich while private equity makes a bucket of money off you,” Warren said.

Elizabeth Warren’s Private Equity Criticism Wins Unlikely Support

Warren’s argument drew unusual agreement from several users who made clear they typically disagree with the Massachusetts senator.

“We rarely agree but this time she is spot on!” one response stated. Another wrote, “This is the first time I’ve ever agreed with her. My husband and I talk about how terrible food is now all the time. It’s just not good anymore.”

That sentiment extended to another critic who wrote, “I used to be able to say I disagree with 100% of anything that Senator Warren says. Now I can say 99% good [expletive] Elizabeth. Good [expletive].”

A separate response remained skeptical but conceded, “You know, again you’re probably not wrong here. If I forget everything I know about you personally, this is not a terrible argument for more regulation of all of this private equity stuff. I just don’t think you’ll do any of it.”

Others rejected Warren’s call for intervention. “The market will solve this problem without your clumsy interference,” one user wrote. Another argued, “If you noticed that the quality has gone down, and the price has gone up, it’s your choice not to patronize them. Problem solved.”

Warren called for broader action against private equity but did not identify a specific food-industry bill. Her remarks leave the next legislative step unclear.
