Matt Reeves, the director of The Batman, has divulged some details on the upcoming project during an interview with The Hollywood Reporter. When asked what his film would look like, Reeves said:
“It’s very much a point of view-driven, noir Batman tale. It’s told very squarely on his shoulders, and I hope it’s going to be a story that will be thrilling but also emotional. It’s more Batman in his detective mode than we’ve seen in the films. The comics have a history of that. He’s supposed to be the world’s greatest detective, and that’s not necessarily been a part of what the movies have been. I’d love this to be one where when we go on that journey of tracking down the criminals and trying to solve a crime, it’s going to allow his character to have an arc so that he can go through a transformation.”
A Batman movie that puts focus on Bruce Wayne’s detective skills sounds intriguing for sure and would definitely stand out from the other Batman franchises. But, what makes a great Batman movie is the villain. Matt Reeves was also asked about who will be facing off with The Dark Knight:
“There will be a Rogues Gallery. The casting process will begin shortly. We’re starting to put together our battle plan. I’m doing another pass on the script and we’ll begin some long-lead stuff to start developing conceptual things.”
This is sure to be the quote to keep your eye on. Over the past few years, there have been theories that implicated the likes of Red Hood, Penguin, and even The Court of Owls as the main villains of Reeves’ movie. It seems that The Batman will have multiple antagonists, which will only give fans more hope that they will see their favorite rogue pop up.
Reeves revealed that the movie is still called The Batman but this title could change later on in the development process. Finally, the director said that he is hoping for a 2021 release date for the movie, but he wouldn’t commit to it yet.
With WB focusing on solo movies at the moment, I wouldn’t expect The Batman to be the next grand DCEU film that sets up the next Justice League. Reeves has been adamant about keeping this as a standalone project, whether Ben Affleck dons the cowl again or not.
