Donald Trump‘s run for the 2024 presidential Election was raised to higher stakes on Monday when he announced his running mate. On Day 1 of the Republican National Convention, the former president unveiled Senator JD Vance as his vice president to a roaring applause from the crowd. In a post on his Truth Social media platform, Trump explained that he settled on the Ohio senator “after lengthy deliberation and thought.”
Vance has served as a junior senator for the Buckeye State since January 2023. Like his running mate, the 39-year-old has limited office experience. However, when their lives outside politics are explored, that isn’t all they have in common.
What Is JD Vance’s Networth?
Trump and Vance are successful businessmen embodying the American Dream. Forbes reports that the senator is worth $10 million and is a self-made millionaire. Most of his wealth comes from his best-seller book, Hillbilly Elegy, which sold over 3 million copies. In the 2016 memoir, Vance opened up about his poverty-stricken childhood and how he escaped through education.
He recalls joining the Marines after high school because he couldn’t afford college. After ending his service in 2007, Vance took another shot at school by enrolling at Ohio State University. He then furthered his education at Yale Law School. The politician revealed that he didn’t acquire massive student debts because of the Marines and financial aid. Outside of a successful writing career, Vance owns his own venture firm, Narya. His real estate portfolio is reportedly worth over $4 million and comprises three homes — two in Washington DC and one in Cincinnati.
A Look At JD Vance’s Controversies
Although the 39-year-old politician isn’t nearly as controversial as his superior, Vance has made headlines for his fair share of disputable opinions. A proponent of traditional marriage values, the lawyer-turned-venture-capitalist caught fire in 2022 for suggesting people should stay in “violent” marriages because of the rise in divorce rates. Per Vice, while addressing the Pacifica Christian High School crowd, the senator bashed the concept of “people to shift spouses like they change their underwear.” He referenced his grandparent’s marriage as one to be emulated.
“My grandparents had an incredibly chaotic marriage in a lot of ways, but they never got divorced, right? They were together to the end, ’til death do us part.”
When asked about his comment, Vance and his team responded that his message was taken out of context.
JD Vance Has Been Happily Married For 10 Years
True to his family values, Vance has been with his college sweetheart, Usha Chilukuri. They met at Yale Law School and walked down the aisle in 2014, a year after graduating, in an interfaith marriage blessed by a Hindu pundit. The lovebirds have different faiths, with Usha Hindu and Vance Christian. However, the senator has talked about how his wife supported his journey to finding his faith.
“Usha was actually raised non-Christian. She is actually not Christian. But I remember when I started to re-engage with my own faith, Usha was very supportive.”
