A Missouri mom has sparked a widespread online conversation after sharing what she says is an example of the “pink tax” while shopping for children’s clothing in Walmart. Her TikTok comparison of boys’ and girls’ apparel has racked up more than 1.6 million views, with the debate spilling onto Reddit, where it has also drawn thousands of comments and upvotes.
Shae, a Missouri stay-at-home mom who regularly shares parenting and lifestyle content on TikTok, recently went viral after comparing the prices of boys’ and girls’ children’s clothing while shopping. In the footage, Shae says, “I’m at Walmart right now, and the pink tax is ridiculous in the kids’ department. Look at this,” before turning the camera to a display of children’s socks. She points out that a pack of girls’ socks costs more than a comparable pack of boys’ socks, which she says demonstrates the “pink tax.”
She begins by comparing two six-packs of boys’ socks priced at $3.00 each with similar six-packs of girls’ socks costing $9.98. Even the least expensive girls’ socks she finds are priced at $6.00, prompting her to question why comparable products carry such different price tags.
The Missouri mom also highlights a rack of clearance T-shirts, noting that the girls’ versions are priced at $2, while comparable boys’ T-shirts nearby cost just $1.
The video quickly gained traction on TikTok, where thousands of viewers weighed in on whether the price differences reflected the so-called “pink tax” or whether there were other explanations.
