Michael Cain, one of the few living legends of cinema, is officially retired at the age of 90. The British actor is mostly known for his roles in Christopher Nolan films, most notably Alfred Pennyworth in the Dark Knight trilogy.

Michael Cain has appeared in more than 130 films and has one of the richest filmographies any actor could wish for. Cain has six Oscar nominations and won two of them for his roles in Hannah and Her Sister in 1986 and The Cider House Rules in 1999. He also got three Emmy nominations for Jekyll & Hyde, World War II: When Lions Roared, and Mandela and de Klerk.

Michael Cain has said in an interview with BBC’s Today Show that he is officially retired. Cain said “I keep saying I’m going to retire, Well, I am now,” in the show to announce his retirement. The Great Escaper is his last film and he previously pointed out that this would be his final work.

The only parts I’m liable to get now are 90-year-old men. Or maybe 85. They’re not going to be the lead. You don’t have leading men at 90, you’re going to have young handsome boys and girls. So I thought, I might as well leave with all this.

Apart from numerous movies, Cain has appeared in many TV Shows like Jack the Ripper (1988) and 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea (1997). Many younger filmgoers will be familiar with Michael Cain as Alfred, Bruce Wayne’s butler in the Dark Knight trilogy directed by Christopher Nolan, Kingsman: The Secret Service, and Dunkirk. It is worth noting that Cain also did the voice of Alfred in the Batman Begins video game.

The cinema world will surely miss this amazing actor who’s contributed so much to this form of art. The new generation of actors will look at his works for inspiration and it will be remembered for eternity. There is a good chance that many award ceremonies like The Academy Awards will give him an award for a lifetime achievement.
