A poll from Emerson College Polling shows Abdul El-Sayed 15 points ahead of Haley Stevens in the Democratic primary for Michigan’s U.S. Senate seat, indicating that he is the likely nominee. The news sparked mixed reactions among Michigan Democratic voters, however, as many fear that this could mean losing the seat to Republican Mike Rogers.

Emerson College Polling, known as one of the most trustworthy pollsters in Michigan, has El-Sayed at 54% of the vote, compared to 39% for Stevens. Undecided voters make up the remaining 6%, while the poll has a margin of error of 3.7%.

El-Sayed has seen enormous growth in Emerson College’s polling, rising from 16% in January to 54% in July. However, that meteoric rise may still not be enough to defeat Mike Rogers in November. Polls show that, due to a lack of support from independent voters, El-Sayed is polling 10 points behind Rogers.

Michigan Reacts to El-Sayed’s Lead in the Primaries

The prospect of El-Sayed winning the primary concerned some people online. As one user commented on X, “Sayed will be OBLITERATED in the general election, which is of course what you and the DSA always wanted. You’re a bunch of [expletive] who hate the Democratic Party.”

Others seemed to agree with the sentiment: “Dems happy to throw a winnable Senate seat away. Sad.” A seemingly Democratic voter also said: “Well, if that happens, Mike Rogers is the Senator from Michigan. Pathetic.”

However, others appeared excited by the prospect of his victory, viewing it as a major win for the party’s more progressive wing: “It’s over in Michigan. Abdul will be the nominee. A major defeat for AIPAC and the entire establishment. Tens of millions of dollars spent and countless messaging efforts—all for nothing. And the best part? This is only the beginning.”

If El-Sayed does win, it remains to be seen how his campaign will try to win over independent voters ahead of November and whether the party’s more moderate wing will actively support his general election campaign. One question, posed by a user in the thread, remains: “Will Stevens endorse El-Sayed after the primary?”
