A man in Michigan thought he was hearing things when a relentless buzzing followed him around while he worked on a project. He eventually discovered the source was much closer than expected: a tiny wasp nest had been built inside the cap he was wearing.

Grabbed my hat from the pole barn and started working on a project but kept hearing a buzzing sound. Couldn’t figure it out and called Monica over to listen too. She yanked off my hat and there went a mud bee. Couldn’t feel it in there moving around and was surprised to find it built a home in my hat. Glad it wasn’t something that wanted to bite or sting me. #mudbee #muddauber #workinghard #diyproject

The bizarre discovery was shared by Matt, who runs the Living Our American Dream account with his wife, Monica. The couple typically posts DIY home projects and outdoor living content, but Matt’s unexpected encounter quickly became one of their biggest videos, garnering three million views, 26,200 likes, and more than 400 comments.

The Michigan man detailed in the clip’s description that, before working on a project, he grabbed a cap from his pole barn. While working, however, he began noticing an incessant buzzing sound that he couldn’t seem to escape.

Unable to figure out where the buzzing was coming from, Matt eventually called Monica over to make sure he wasn’t hearing things. She then grabbed Matt’s cap, and the mystery was solved. Inside was a small mud dauber nest. Mud daubers are generally considered less aggressive toward people than many other wasps, although they are capable of stinging.

“What are the odds of that?” Matt asked after laughing. “They just literally built this nest since last weekend.”

While mud dauber wasps do not bite if unprovoked, the Michigan man still got rid of the nest to prevent any further buzzing.

Michigan Man’s Hat Discovery Unlocks a New Fear

Many viewers, potentially those not too fond of wasps, were shocked to see the nest inside the man’s cap. One said, “I’d cut my ear off.” Another one commented, “New fear unlocked.” A third one added, “Throw the freaking hat away. That’s what I would do.”

Other viewers didn’t believe Matt should have gotten rid of the nest. One wrote, “You’re destroying them for no reason. They literally don’t sting people.” Matt responded, “It’s in my hat that I wear when I work outside. So no, it’s not staying there. And they do sting, but very rarely.”

Matt may have solved the mystery behind the relentless buzzing, but after discovering what had been hiding inches from his head, grabbing a cap from the pole barn may never be quite as simple again.
