A video posted on TikTok shows several officers in Grosse Pointe, Michigan, approaching the creator and speaking with him about a reported welfare check. According to one of the officials present, “Problem is, that people think you need to be checked on.”
Commenters were quick to jump into the replies and discuss the video’s events. Many commenters condemned the officers’ behavior while offering sympathy to the black man who was recording.
The video begins with the camera facing a group of officers walking towards the cameraman. One of the officers frequently asks the man to “stop walking away.” At this, the man responded with, “Well, I like my space.”
Shortly after this, one officer told the man he was “under investigation,” though the specific nature of the investigation was not explained in the video. Allegedly because someone had asked that he be checked on. The exchange became increasingly tense, and the officer began arguing with the gentleman over the definition of ‘profiling.’
The officers continued to explain that they received a call from someone asking them to check on the man and to ask for his identification. However, it was not made clear exactly what they were checking for or if the investigation was still ongoing.
As the exchange continued, it became clear that the conversation would only continue escalating. Eventually, the officers realized there was nothing more they had to discuss with the man and told him he was free to go.
