New testimony in former Michigan House Speaker Lee Chatfield’s court case includes fresh accusations against the politician, including allegations that he used campaign funds to rent yachts. These new allegations made Michigan residents furious, and many took to social media to criticize Chatfield and the Republican Party.

As reported by Raw Story, Chatfield is currently facing 13 felony charges over allegations that he misused campaign funds for personal expenses. Chatfield’s former chief of staff, Rob Minard, also reportedly told the court that Chatfield used donated money to pay for several activities, including private jet flights, yacht rentals, stays at luxury hotels and restaurants, gambling, and more.

The reports also indicate that Minard claimed Chatfield and his wife, Stephanie, would even pocket cash contributions from campaign donors, sending the money to their bank accounts. Chatfield has pleaded not guilty in the case.

Residents Criticize Michigan’s Lee Chatfield

Michigan residents reacted to the news on Reddit’s r/Michigan, strongly criticizing the Republican Party over Chatfield’s alleged actions. One of them said: “Republicans spend money on lavish travels, and Americans hardly make a sound about it. Democrats float the idea of spending money on public services that directly benefit their constituents, and Americans scream like banshees.”

Others agreed with the sentiment that Republicans often face little accountability, saying: “If they’re Republican you can bet they’re grifting the American taxpayer.” Others turned their attention to voters: “If republican voters cared about corruption, they wouldn’t be republican voters.”

Some seemingly pessimistic users also believed that Americans could see more cases like this in the future: “Why would anyone be surprised by this? It’s going to get worse. Trump opened the doors to the most corrupt narcissists to want to get political power.”

Someone even shared a story in which they allegedly saw the politician in person, claiming: “This guy and his campaign manager came into a restaurant I worked in when I lived in Petoskey. The restaurant stayed open late on weekends after the kitchen closed. He and his crew spent the night ogling young women and buying shots for everyone. Then it came out a couple of years later that he was having affairs.”

In any case, Chatfield is still facing the charges, and it remains to be seen whether he will be convicted. One user summarized the overall feeling of people following the case, though: “Stealing money? SOP for the GOP.”
