As the Michigan Senate race advances, some residents are becoming increasingly confident that Abdul El-Sayed will win the Democratic primary. However, others are skeptical that he will be able to overcome Michigan candidates such as Haley Stevens.
In a recent Reddit post that gained more than 1,300 upvotes, one Michigan resident claimed that while traveling through Williamston, Bellaire, Charlevoix, Petoskey, and Harbor Springs a few days earlier, they were surprised by the overwhelming number of El-Sayed yard signs they saw.
As the Democratic primary approaches on August 4, Michigan’s Senate race continues to heat up. El-Sayed was recently endorsed by Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, while his opponent Stevens recently gained the support of Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel.
Michigan Residents Discuss El-Sayed’s Chances
While many people agreed with the Reddit user who made the post, saying they were seeing El-Sayed signs everywhere, others remained skeptical that this would automatically translate into a victory. As one user put it: “Reminder that road signs are not an accurate predictor of voter turnout or election percentages.”
Others argued that the reason for so many signs is that “Abdul is actually a candidate people can get excited for, not necessarily that a majority of people are gonna vote for him. Who is stoked to vote for Haley Stevens? Like enough to display it with yard signs? Probably no one.”
Many users believed that “Yard signs tend to be an indicator of early enthusiasm. Your well-funded, less exciting candidate will only invest in yard signs in the last couple weeks before the election. Abdul is in your front yard; Stevens is in your social media feed and your mailbox.” Others agreed with the sentiment: “Signs don’t vote, we heard the same thing in 2016 with Bernie, and Reddit in no way reflects the larger electorate.”
Some locals were also concerned about how social media platforms such as Reddit can become echo chambers for certain viewpoints: “This is exactly what happened with Ron Paul in 2012, Bernie Sanders in 2016 (and 2020) (…) If you asked your average Redditor, it was very clear that we were starting a new political movement right here, and the signs all over the neighborhood were proof that it was real.”
The Democratic nominee for Michigan’s U.S. Senate seat will be decided in just under a month. Until then, voters can only speculate about who will come out on top.
