Microsoft’s In-Game Ad Breaks Patent Surfaced Amid Rumors of a Cheaper Game Pass Tier

At least you don’t have to shout a brand’s name at your screen with this

As if microtransactions and subscriptions aren’t enough money-squeezing strategies. Remember that ridiculous patent from Sony about players having to shout “McDonald’s!” to stop ads? Yeah, the one that immediately got scrutinized to hell and back. Well, a concept gamers have mocked for years might actually become reality from its rival. Microsoft has also been exploring a similarly annoying way to monetize games. The timing couldn’t be more suspicious, too, as there are talks of Xbox adding an ad-supported Game Pass tier in 2027.

The patent application, listed on research and development listing site Patsnap Eureka, is titled “Contextually Aware Management of Interactive Software Application Access” and was published on September 3, 2026. Filed by Microsoft Technology Licensing, it describes technology that can determine ‘context’ when a user is interacting with an ‘interactive software application’ and decide when to display ‘promoted audiovisual content.’

Once it identifies that moment, the system could suspend access to the software, play the promoted content, then let the user jump back in. Watching it could also grant additional playtime or ‘credits,’ with the document giving 30 minutes of game access, for example. If that doesn’t sound an awful lot like an automated commercial break, then I don’t know what else to call it.

What’s more, though, this application comes at a very interesting time for the Green Team. Recently, gaming forum ResetEra moderator Slayven claims Microsoft is planning another Game Pass shakeup next year. He wrote that the service could be consolidated into two main options, a $12.99 tier supported by ads and a $19.99 option without it.

Slayven stressed that the information should be treated as a rumor—but with one major caveat. “[…] I know the person and they been right in the past,” he added. “And I don’t post rumors unless they got some meat on the bone.” Resident leaker NateDrake weighed in on this hearsay, adding the source “clearly has knowledge of some matters” in the forum thread.

Of course, reiterating what Slayven said, always take rumors and patent listings with a grain of salt. Not to mention, nothing currently ties this patent application to the rumored Game Pass overhaul. Thousands of gaming patents have never come to fruition, and hopefully, that’s all there is to this one. Gaming has already borrowed enough good and bad ideas from everywhere else; we don’t need it to start acting like YouTube or Twitch, too.
