The player count for Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 and Warzone 2 has significantly decreased since their releases. Although both games had a very strong start, with Modern Warfare 2 earning over $800 million in its opening weekend and Warzone 2 garnering over 25 million players within five days, it appears that the number of active users has dropped to an all-time low now, perhaps because of waning interest.
According to a post on CharlieIntel, the peak concurrent player count for Modern Warfare 2 and Warzone 2 on Steam was under 90,000, the biggest drop since their respective release dates. As of the time of writing, the user count has dropped even further to around 70,000 with the 24-hour peak at around 85,000. These numbers are a far cry from the all-time peak of 488,897 and are also lower than the peak concurrent player count of competitors Destiny 2 and Apex Legends, which are at around 140,000 and 570,000 respectively.
Modern Warfare 2 and Warzone 2 Player Numbers Dropping
The post on CharlieIntel also indicates that players have expressed several reasons for the decrease in user count. One common complaint is the SBMM system implemented in the Call of Duty titles, with players feeling that it negatively affects their gameplay experience. Fans have also expressed frustration with Activision and Infinity Ward’s refusal to add some highly-requested features such as the classic Call of Duty mini-map. Additionally, the handling of playlists in Modern Warfare 2 has received criticism, with the popular Shipment 24/7 playlist regularly being removed from the game.
When it comes to Warzone 2, some users have expressed dissatisfaction with the limited-time game modes and the monetization practices of Activision, with one fan stating that the game never had the same charm as the original Warzone. Overall, it appears that there are many reasons why Modern Warfare 2 and Warzone 2 players are unhappy with the current state of the games.
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 and Call of Duty: Warzone 2 are available right now on PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, and PC.
