New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani announced a pricing plan for five city-run grocery stores in Brooklyn. He said essential staples would stay 30% below typical retail prices for an entire month. The proposal drew attention for combining city ownership with fixed discounts across major food categories.

ABC7 Eyewitness News aired the announcement live from East New York.

Mamdani said each store would set monthly prices for a core group of essential goods. He described the discounts as “no exceptions, no gimmicks.” Prices would remain fixed until the stores reset them the following month.

He said the structure would prevent weekly fluctuations and checkout sticker shock. He said it would help seniors on fixed incomes and parents managing regular food expenses.

The discounted group would include all fresh produce, meat, seafood, cheese, milk, bread, and 20 other staples. Mamdani displayed plantains while directing shoppers to a QR code for pricing details.

Zohran Mamdani’s 30%-Off Grocery Plan Draws Taxpayer and Small-Business Debate

The announcement quickly sparked competing arguments over taxpayer costs, private competition, and government-run food retail.

One X user wrote, “More empty promises from the Communist.” Another warned, “This will be a disaster, no doubt. Not only will it cost the city greatly since grocery store profit margins are very low, it will also hurt many smaller businesses that sell grocery items.”

A separate response asked, “Who is paying for this? Someone has to pay for it.” Another predicted, “They’ll force the small business owners out first, then the government-run businesses will fail, leaving carnage behind.”

Supporters pushed back against those objections. One wrote, “These stores will be hugely successful. All you dumb MAGA, many of who don’t have much, defending the billionaire class over your own class is shameful.”

Another argued, “A lot of people complain here but are not worried when their tax money is used to support Israel, but when tax money is used to support poor Americans, they cannot hold back their anger. Weird.”

The announcement did not explain the funding structure or address possible effects on nearby private grocers. Those questions remain central to the debate over the plan.
