After what happened to be the teaser trailer of Karl Urban Johnny Cage‘s movie, Uncaged Fury, the full trailer of the Mortal Kombat 2 movie is out, and oh my Lord Liu Kang, it was brilliant! The trailer drops a pinch of the story that we got a teaser about by the end of the first movie. “Death is just another portal.”
As expected, Johnny Cage is at the center of the action in the Mortal Kombat 2 movie trailer, showcasing an actor who’s been chosen by none other than the Thunder God Raiden to participate in the tournament. This is a nice shift of strategy for the MK movies going forward since Cole Young — a new character not featured in the games — was under the spotlight in the Mortal Kombat 2021 pic. So far, so good.
Then the fight begins! There are so many new faces on the scene like Kitana, Jade, Baraka,… and as we all wanted, the Mortal Kombat 2 movie is just as gory as the first one. Shao Kahn is the main villain of this deciding tournament for the fate of the Earthrealm, and Martyn Ford brings the character to life with Brutality.
What’s interesting is that some of the key deceased characters from the first movie are back in full force. No, we don’t see Goro around, but Kung Lao is somewhere that looks like the levels from Mortal Kombat: Shaolin Monks, meeting with Liu Kang. The two are later seen fighting an unknown foe, and then we’ve got Kano throwing a joke at the table after he died in the first movie.
As of right now, we’ve got no idea how the logic of bringing back the dead works in the Mortal Kombat 2 movie trailer, but at the end of the first film, Shang Tsung did mention that “death is only a portal.” This is while Bi-Han/Sub-Zero is actually confirmed to be dead as he’s now transformed into Noob Saibot, as he’s always been in the MK lore.
Our champions will defend Earthrealm on October 24, 2025, in the Mortal Kombat 2 movie, and I hope they’ve given Liu Kang more screen time as the Chosen One this time around.
