A mixed bag in terms of genre – though hopefully not in quality – April is shaping up to be an interesting month for the theater. While superhero fatigue keeps capes out of the box office, this coming month sees horror films, action movies, thrillers, comedies, and even anime arrive at the theater. So, if you’re looking for an excuse to buy some things at the snack bar, here are ten of the most anticipated movies that are set to release in April 2024.
Wicked Little Letters
First on our list is Wicked Little Letters, which will be widely released in U.S. theaters on April 5, 2024. Directed by Thea Sharrock, it is a British black comedy that follows Rose Gooding (Jessie Buckley), who is framed for writing a series of vulgar letters targeted towards her neighbors. The scandalous comedy also stars Olivia Colman, Anjana Vasan, and Timothy Spall. Wicked Little Letters is currently sitting at 70% on Rotten Tomatoes.
Monkey Man
For many, Monkey Man should be the most anticipated movie of April. It’s a John Wick-style action film with Dev Patel starring and making his directorial debut. A Robin Hood story of revenge, it follows Kid (Patel) who hunts down the corruption responsible for his mother’s death. It also stars Sharlto Copley, Pitobash, Vipin Sharma, Sikandar Kher, and Sobhita Dhulipala. Monkey Man is set to be released on April 5, 2024. It is currently sitting at a 92% on Rotten Tomatoes after premiering at South by Southwest earlier in March.
The First Omen
April’s first high-profile horror film is the prequel to Richard Donner’s The Omen, The First Omen. Directed by Arkasha Stevenson, it tells the story of how the Antichrist – and the main antagonist of The Omen franchise – came to be. It stars Nell Tiger Free, Sônia Braga, Ralph Ineson, and Bill Nighy. If you liked Immaculate, you might want to check out The First Omen in theaters on April 5, 2024.
Civil War
We said there wouldn’t be any capes, so this isn’t a Captain America movie. Directed by Alex Garland, Civil War follows a group of journalists across a dystopian United States during the brink of the (fictional) Second American Civil War. It stars Kirsten Dunst, Wagner Moura, Stephen McKinley Henderson, Cailee Spaeny, Jesse Plemons, and Sonoya Mizuno with Nick Offerman as the President of the United States. Civil War premiered at South by Southwest and it is currently sitting at 91% on Rotten Tomatoes. It is slated to be released on April 12, 2024.
Abigail
The most anticipated horror movie of April 2024 is one you can sink your teeth into. Directed by Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett, Abigail follows a group of kidnappers who are holding a young girl named Abigail for a $50 million ransom from her father. They just didn’t think the girl would be a vampire. The film looks like a bloody mess in the best of ways and it’s releasing on April 19, 2024. It stars Melissa Barrera, Alisha Weir, Dan Stevens, Kathryn Newton, Kevin Durand, Giancarlo Esposito, and in his last role, the late Angus Cloud.
Spy × Family Code: White
Who’s ready to see Anya on the big screen, when Spy x Family Code: White comes to theaters on April 19, 2024? While the film was released in Japanese theaters last year, April will see both the subbed and the new dubbed version come to theaters around the world. It follows a new adventure for the Forager family, as they go on a vacation, only to find themselves in the middle of a world-ending event. Spy x Family Code: White was directed by Takashi Katagiri.
Sasquatch Sunset
The most bonkers movie on this list is Sasquatch Sunset. Starring Jessie Eisenberg and Riley Keough, it follows a family of sasquatches who live in the woods. It was directed by Nathan Zellner and David Zellner, with Nathan also starring as one of the creatures. They don’t talk, they only grunt. With a runtime of 89 minutes, that shouldn’t get too repetitive. It premiered at the 2024 Sundance Film Festival earlier this year, and it is currently at 80% on Rotten Tomatoes. You can catch Sasquatch Sunset when it comes to theaters on April 19, 2024, or during its limited release the week before.
The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare
Their first collaboration since The Man from U.N.C.L.E., director Guy Ritchie and Henry Cavill have reunited for the hotly anticipated action comedy movie, The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare. It is loosely based on historical events, following the Special Operations Executive team who were responsible for conducting black ops missions to defeat the Nazis in World War II. It stars Henry Cavill, Alan Ritchson, Eiza González, Alex Pettyfer, Hero Fiennes Tiffin, and Henry Golding. The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare will be released on April 19, 2024.
Challengers
Is anybody up for a little tennis? Well, you might be when Zendaya‘s involved. Challengers tells the story of a tennis prodigy ruined by injury, who is also caught in the middle of a steamy and vengeful love triangle both on and off the court. Directed by Luca Guadagnino, the film also stars Josh O’Connor and Mike Faist. Challengers will be released on April 26, 2024, and it might be the most anticipated movie on this list.
Boy Kills World
It’s Tarzan meets John Wick meets The Hunger Games in action comedy, Boy Kills World. After a deaf boy’s parents are killed, Boy runs away to the jungle and trains to kill their murderers. Directed by Moritz Mohr, the film stars Bill Skarsgård, Jessica Rothe, Brett Gelman, Michelle Dockery, Andrew Koji, Sharlto Copley, Famke Janssen, Isaiah Mustafa, and H. Jon Benjamin from Bob’s Burgers as Boy’s inner voice. Boy Kills World premiered last year at the 2023 Toronto International Film Festival, and you can see it in theaters on April 26, 2023. It’s currently sitting at 71% on Rotten Tomatoes.
