A chaotic confrontation at Nevada‘s Harry Reid International Airport has ignited a nationwide debate after footage showed two plainclothes ICE agents tackling an older man before abruptly walking away as confused travelers surrounded the scene. The supposedly failed ICE “raid” in the airport has also gone viral with millions of views.
The incident unfolded on July 13 inside Terminal 3 of the Harry Reid International Airport in Las Vegas, Nevada, where filmmaker Chris Motley said he heard a man yelling for help while passing through the airport after filming a documentary. Curious about the disturbance, Motley began recording as two individuals dressed in civilian clothing attempted to restrain the man on the floor with the help of a TSA agent.
The footage quickly spread across social media, with viewers questioning whether the pair were legitimate law enforcement officers or private citizens. The agents wore casual clothing, including hoodies, leggings, and a medical mask, with no immediately visible police uniforms, fueling confusion among witnesses. “What’s going on?” Motley can be heard repeatedly asking in the video as bystanders gathered around the struggle.
The Department of Homeland Security later confirmed the two individuals were Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officers attempting to detain 57-year-old Phu Nguyen. According to the agency, Nguyen, an Australian citizen, legally entered the United States in 2013 but allegedly remained in the country after his visa expired in 2015.
ICE said officers abandoned the arrest after a crowd formed around them, deciding to “de-escalate the situation” out of concern for officer safety. In the process, Nguyen reportedly walked away with a handcuff still attached to one wrist.
People online are worried
Las Vegas Metropolitan Police officers later responded to the disturbance, removed the handcuff, conducted a records check, and found no outstanding warrants before notifying ICE. Federal authorities located Nguyen the following day at Los Angeles International Airport again in Nevada, where he was arrested while preparing to board another flight. ICE said he remains in custody pending immigration proceedings and will receive due process.
The unusual encounter has sparked widespread criticism online, with many people arguing that the agents’ appearance made it nearly impossible for the public to recognize them as law enforcement. “How are people supposed to know this is law enforcement?” one user wrote, while another questioned why officers “had nothing to identify themselves as ICE.” One commenter couldn’t help but rant, “Welcome to Trumperica, the hottest and highly respected country in the world! Tourists will love these pictures!”
The incident has also drawn political attention. Nevada Democratic Sen. Jacky Rosen criticized ICE’s tactics, while the Nevada Latino Legislative Caucus and the Asian American Native Hawaiian Pacific Islander Caucus have called for an investigation into the aborted airport arrest and greater transparency surrounding federal law enforcement operations in the state.
