Nevada Woman Shocked and Irritated by Brother-in-Law’s Cruel Behavior Toward Her Toddler: ‘We Could Be Nicer to a Child’

I can’t imagine doing that to a literal child

A Nevada mom was rightfully concerned when she watched her brother-in-law being cruel to her toddler on video. Even though he claimed it was only a joke, she wasn’t about to stand for that. So, as all good moms do, she jumped into action to protect her son and said something.

Sarah (@sawahpee) said that she received a video from her sister-in-law in their family group chat. The video was of her son (a 2-year-old toddler) handing Sarah’s brother-in-law a shovel in a sandbox. The brother-in-law doesn’t like children, so he has a “running bit” where he acts like he doesn’t like Sarah’s kid. It’s a little joke that he has going on in the family, even though Sarah doesn’t think it’s very funny. So, in the video, her brother-in-law grab’s the shovel out of her toddler’s hand and throws it across the yard. Her son laughs but looks totally disappointed by this.

It was definitely an awkward group chat but mama bear don’t play. Parenting doesn’t come with a handbook, and sometimes the hardest part is figuring out how to handle situations like this. I actually asked Nori for advice on how to approach it in a way that was firm without creating more drama. #storytime #whatwouldyoudo #bully #familydrama #groupchatdrama @Nori

Sarah said about this, “I have been very nice up to this point.” The video was hurtful for her, because she could see the sad look on her son’s face. Sarah looked in the family chat and saw that her sister-in-law laughed at the video, thinking it was hilarious. But Sarah’s husband backed her up because he didn’t think it was funny, either. He sent to his family in the group chat, “We could be nicer to a child. He’s only 2 years old. There’s no need to be a bully.”

Since then, Sarah’s brother-in-law responded to Sarah’s husband and tried to blame his actions on the toddler. He claims Sarah’s child threw sand at him and he had to retaliate against the 2-year-old. Sarah wasn’t about to stand for this. She sent back, “I know you’re joking, but I don’t love the running joke of rejecting or being mean to my kid.” She told the brother-in-law that she doesn’t want this behavior “normalized” around him. Sarah said that nobody responded back immediately following her response. She feels like she struck a nerve with them, but she couldn’t just stay silent on the matter.

This video immediately sparked reactions from viewers, most of whom came to Sarah’s defense on the issue. They expressed shock and rage at the brother-in-law’s actions. One commenter stated, “There’s nothing funny or quirky about hating children. It’s actually weird and concerning.” Other commenters agreed that, perhaps, it’s not actually a joke to the brother-in-law like he says it is. One commenter shared, “I fear it’s not a bit.”

Commenters continue to share their opinions on the video, supporting and backing Sarah. One commenter mentioned, “Kids don’t know the difference between jokes and being serious.” These are very important things her family has to consider.
