Matthew Perry continues to make headlines for his tragic passing on October 28. Just before the weekend, new details surrounding the sitcom star’s passing emerged, this time detailing the moment a bystander found him unresponsive in his hot tub.
Perry, best known for playing funnyman Chandler Bing on sitcom Friends, was 54 when he died at his California home at the end of last month. The LAFD has now confirmed exactly what happened when the bystander found Matthew dead.

Perry passed following a two-hour game of pickleball, after which he sent his assistant out on an errand run. The bystander who found his body is assumed to have been his assistant, but the person’s identity has not been confirmed.
New Details Around Hot Tub Death
“A bystander had brought [Matthew’s] head above the water and gotten him to the edge [of the hot tub], then firefighters removed him from the water,” Nicholas Prange of the LAFD has shared, adding: “A rapid medical assessment, sadly, revealed the man was deceased prior to first responder arrival.”
While local law enforcement stated no illegal drugs to have been found at the scene, and no sign of foul play, toxicology reports confirming Perry’s cause of death are still pending. The much-loved actor had gone public with his decades of substance abuse issues, and it is understood that he was taking prescription medication around the time of his death.
Friend Athenna Crosby, who enjoyed lunch with Matthew one day before he died, revealed:
“I mean, I can’t know what exactly he was thinking or feeling.” She added: “I can only share my experience. And, of course, he was his own person that maybe he had said, done or thought of things the day that he passed that I might never come to know.”
Matthew Perry shot to fame in 1994 as Friends became the sitcom to watch. He starred in every episode of the show’s ten seasons. Fans loved watching his awkward ways with women, quick one-liners, close bond with costar Matt LeBlanc (Joey Tribbiani), plus his eventual relationship with and marriage to Monica Geller (Courteney Cox).
Matthew was buried in a private ceremony last week. The funeral was attended by all of his five former costars. His Instagram following has shot up as a result of his death and now sits at over 9 million.
