Just when you thought things couldn’t get worse when it comes to ICE, they end up getting worse. The arrests now aren’t just directed at immigrants, but anyone who tries to stop ICE officers from enforcing their violence can be arrested as well. Now, things have escalated. A New Jersey mayor named Ras Baraka was arrested at an ICE detention facility based on alleged trespassing. ICE agents claim that Baraka trespassed, while he claims the opposite. The interim U.S. attorney for the District of New Jersey, Alina Habba, shared a post on X where she accused the New Jersey mayor of trespassing. She wrote:
“The Mayor of Newark, Ras Baraka, committed trespass and ignored multiple warnings from Homeland Security Investigations to remove himself from the ICE detention center in Newark, New Jersey this afternoon. He has willingly chosen to disregard the law. That will not stand in this state. He has been taken into custody. NO ONE IS ABOVE THE LAW.”
While the New Jersey mayor was released from custody on Friday, he still has to appear in court. Baraka maintains his innocence. According to NBC News, the New Jersey mayor stated that he was allowed to enter the detention facility and that nothing happened for almost an hour. “After they finally told us to leave, and I told them I was leaving, they came outside the gate and arrested me. So it looked like it was targeted,” he said. Even his wife thinks the same. This comes after Baraka has spoken out against Trump’s deportation policies and also the detention facility where he was arrested.
People Reacting to the Arrest of the New Jersey Mayor
People were left in shock at the arrest of the New Jersey mayor. Many of them were angered by the fact that ICE officers are using masks to hide their identities. “Look at those cowards with face masks on,” one person wrote. Another said, “Only cowards and Russian secret police wear socks on their faces.” One Redditor even said, “Welp Congress members being arrested by masked men in ICE vests. America fully jumped the shark.” Someone also criticized Habba’s statement by saying:
“Alina Habba tweeting that he is guilty of trespass and disobeying orders from law enforcement and that “ NO ONE IS ABOVE THE LAW” all caps this soon after the blanket pardoning of the J6 traitors is some next level hypocrisy.”
People kept commenting that ICE agents, like the ones who arrested the New Jersey mayor, should have their identities known. “Unmask those a**holes,” one wrote. Another believed that ICE agents should be ashamed. They said:
“There should be intense social pressure against anyone you know who works for ICE. It might not seem like much, but humans are social animals and if ICE employees get ostracized from social gatherings like they should be it’ll have an affect. Don’t date them, don’t let them pull any, “it’s just a job”, or “I only work in an office” bulls**t. Constantly bring up and berate any friends or family working there about how bad their employer is, and how ashamed they should be for not quitting. Sure, they’ll bitch about “cancel culture” and “woke”, but f**k ‘em… that’s how you know it’s getting to them.”
The entire situation with the New Jersey mayor is frustrating. Till when will ICE be allowed to do as they please? It’s getting out of hand.
