New photos from the revival of Cinderella show Camilla Cabello and Nicholas Galitzine as their titular characters. The film, directed by Pitch Perfect writer Kay Cannon, will release in September on Amazon Prime. The movie has a star-studded cast, with Camilla Cabello as Cinderella along with Billy Porter, Idina Menzel, Pierce Brosnan, and Minnie Driver.
Kay Cannon’s Cinderella will be the second modern adaptation of the classic fairytale after the 2015 Disney remake starring Lily James, Richard Madden, and Cate Blanchett. James Corden, who is the producer of the film, revealed that it will be a refreshed version of a story everyone knows and loves.
Cannon is known for writing movie musicals and has written and produced the Pitch Perfect franchise. She made her directorial debut with the movie Blockers. James Corden, who is also set to act in Cinderella, has acted in many movie musicals including, Into The Woods, Cats, and Prom. This will be singer-songwriter Camilla Cabello’s acting debut.
Seeing Kay Cannon’s previous projects, it is safe to assume that this retelling of Cinderella will be fun and lighthearted. The studio announcement revealed that the stars will be covering hit songs by “some of the top-selling musical artists of all time.” In its 2020 interim report, music publisher Hipgnosis Songs Fund revealed that it had placed three songs in the soundtrack for Cinderella: “Single Ladies (Put a Ring on It)” by Beyoncé, “Sweet Dreams (Are Made of This)” by Eurythmics, and “Good Times” by Chic.
A fresh take on stories everyone loves has lately become a theme of cinema. Examples of this can be seen with Riverdale, which is based on the Archies Comics and Fate: The Winx Saga being a retelling of the beloved Winx Club cartoons. It will be interesting to see how a modern retelling of a story like Cinderella, which has been a household story, will do in the box office.
The film, made by Sony’s Columbia Pictures, was originally scheduled to release in February 2021 but was delayed due to the pandemic. Weeks ago, it was announced that the film had been bought by Amazon Studios and will release in September.
