Fans of The Matrix trilogy have a reason to get excited. A new trailer for The Matrix Resurrections, the upcoming fourth addition to the franchise, was released today with tons of homages to the original 1999 film.
PC Gamer gave a breakdown of the trailer, noting several images that appear to be deliberately based on the first film. For example, characters portrayed by Yahya Abdul-Mateen, Jessica Henwick, Telma Hopkins, and Jonathan Groff superficially resemble Morpheus, Switch, the Oracle, and Agent Smith respectively. Is it possible that Neo (Keanu Reeves) is reliving the past in an alternate reality?
At one point a character played by Telma Hopkins suggests that this “isn’t the story we think it is.” This seems to be specifically said with the audience in mind. Time will tell exactly what this story is going to be.
Jada Pinkett Smith (who we see in the trailer) will reprise her role from the series along with Daniel Bernhardt and Lambert Wilson. Newcomers will include Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, Jessica Henwick, Neil Patrick Harris, Christina Ricci, and Priyanka Chopra Jonas. Carrie-Anne Moss is also returning as Trinity.
A fourth entry in The Matrix franchise was greenlit in 2019. This was despite notable character deaths in The Matrix Revolutions, namely the deaths of Neo and Trinity. The title of this film, Resurrections, will likely explain how these characters have come back to life.
The film has received an R-rating for violence and language, and it will be released in theaters on December 22.
