A storm is brewing in the Big Apple after controversial New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani caused a ton of drama among loyal and hardcore basketball fans. The controversy began following a tweet from the official mayoral account showing the progressive leader welcoming the San Antonio Spurs’ young phenom Victor Wembanyama, the New York Knicks’ direct opponent in the upcoming NBA Finals, to a government ‘efficiency meeting’ later this week.
For a city experiencing its first NBA Finals run since 1999, the gesture was viewed by many die-hard fans not as a sign of mayoral hospitality, but as a severe betrayal of the hometown team. However, it became abundantly clear that the message in question went way over many people’s heads. Here is what Mayor Mamdani said on X.
I’m pleased to invite Wemby to our second Commission on Government Efficiency hearing on Wednesday June 10th 5-8pm, where we’ll be asking the public for their thoughts on how government can run better. Would love to have you there for the whole time!
Now, on the surface, it comes across as genuine, but it didn’t take long for some smart New York citizens to notice that the date would be Game 4, which would basically leave Wemby absent from the game, suggesting an easy win for the hometown Knicks. Here is some of the community’s anger and humor.
“Maybe he could block some of your policies”
“Yeah, let’s invite a player from the opposing team during the biggest finals match up in New York’s history lmao Knicks in 4 now… mamdummy and the spurs”
“Would be so funny if Wemby goes, drops some wisdom on that committee then drops 35/10/5/5 on the Knicks”
“I have a remedy: limit government to its proper functions and let civil society thrive in theirs. But you are a fool. You think government is benevolent, protective. It’s actually coercive and incompetent. More honest labour is done by handicraftsmen than all the bureaucrats.”
Although Mayor Mamdani has plenty of detractors who despise his policies and claim they are hypocritical, this is clearly a goodwill gesture at the Spurs’ expense, and hopefully it works. After the gutsy play by Brunson and KAT in the huge Game 1 upset of the NBA Finals, New York is only three games away from their first championship in decades.
