A New York lawyer was sentenced to up to six years in prison for a major COVID-related fraud that ran into millions of dollars. A viral video shows the moment of his tearful courtroom breakdown during his March 2026 sentencing. The story is attracting a great deal of attention, given the large sums of money involved in the pandemic.

The New York Post reports that Bryan McKenna, an attorney, was sentenced in Manhattan on March 24, 2026, after he admitted to stealing about $4.4 million. The money was supposed to go toward buying medical protective gear during the COVID-19 pandemic, but prosecutors say he spent it elsewhere. Since then, the case has picked up steam online, with videos and posts of the courtroom scene spreading all over social media.

In a video that has gone viral, McKenna is in court, wiping away tears and struggling to get his words out in front of the judge. He is visibly emotional, and the clip captures that raw moment.

McKenna used to be a Manhattan real estate attorney. Now, he is reportedly facing two to six years in prison after he admitted to fraud. His lawyers argued that he was struggling financially, and some of the money went toward supporting his family, including covering his son’s mental health care and funding his then-girlfriend’s expenses.

Internet Reacts to New York Attorney COVID Fraud Case

The story quickly sparked strong reactions online, with many users focusing on the scale of the fraud and its timing during the pandemic. “Cried in court but had no problem spending $4.4M that was meant to help people during a pandemic. That’s not mental health, that’s greed catching up with you,” one person wrote.

Others called for stricter consequences, questioning whether the sentence was enough. “6 years is too lenient fr he should do life for endangering other people lives just to enrich himself and his girlfriend,” a user commented, while another added, “People need to have severe consequences for stealing from tax payers.”

Some responses reflected on the broader impact of the crime. “Covid was a bad time for may families.; stealing over 4 million dollars is rather wickedness,” one comment read.

At the same time, a few comments focused on the emotional moment captured in court. “Sometimes you don’t know the value of freedom until you’re locked up,” another user wrote.

People are paying attention to this story because it mixes a big fraud case with an emotional scene in the courtroom. The video shows a huge gap between the crime’s scale and how everyone reacted in that moment, and now the internet is buzzing with arguments about accountability, sentencing, and what happened with pandemic relief money. Even as the case keeps spreading online, the intense courtroom moment is still what everyone keeps coming back to.
