Hayden Panettiere grew up in New York before spending nearly her entire life in front of Hollywood cameras. Just five days before the Heroes star was supposed to celebrate her 37th birthday, that life has ended at only 36.
Panettiere’s death was confirmed Sunday night by her representative. No cause of death or further details surrounding what happened had been publicly announced.
Her representative remembered Panettiere as “an incredible light and a force of nature” who brought enormous joy to those who knew her and millions who watched her onscreen.
Born August 21, 1989, Panettiere began working as a child before exploding into mainstream fame as seemingly indestructible cheerleader Claire Bennet on NBC’s Heroes. She later starred as troubled country singer Juliette Barnes on Nashville and became a horror favorite as Kirby Reed in Scream 4 and Scream VI.
News of her death immediately stunned fans on X, where old clips, photographs and tributes began flooding timelines.
“This one hurts,” one devastated user wrote.
Another reminded others that “you never know what someone is going through,” while fans of the Scream franchise mourned the loss of the actress who brought Kirby back more than a decade after her original appearance.
“Rest in peace Hayden,” another wrote as disbelief spread online.
Hayden Panettiere Spent Final Months Reclaiming Her Story
The tragedy comes only three months after Panettiere released perhaps the most personal project of her career.
Her memoir, This Is Me: A Reckoning, arrived May 19 and confronted postpartum depression, addiction and recovery, trauma, domestic abuse and devastating loss. The publisher described it as Panettiere finally telling her story on her own terms.
Among the most painful chapters involved her younger brother Jansen, who died unexpectedly at 28 in February 2023 from an enlarged heart and aortic valve complications.
Panettiere later admitted she never expected to completely recover from losing him, saying she would “always be heartbroken.”
She also leaves behind daughter Kaya, 11, whom she shared with former fiancé Wladimir Klitschko. Only months ago, Panettiere pushed back against claims that she had abandoned her daughter, describing their relationship as an “incredible bond” and explaining that they remained connected through visits and frequent FaceTime conversations.
For an actress who had been famous nearly her entire life, Panettiere’s final months became about taking ownership of a story other people had discussed for decades.
Five days before another birthday could arrive, that story has ended far earlier than anyone expected.
For fans sharing decades of memories Sunday night, perhaps the simplest reaction said it best:
“This one hurts.”
