New Yorkers Have Started ‘Pickle Tourism’ in a Strange New Trend: ‘Showing a Pickle to the Statue of Liberty’

The United States of Pickles

In a unique way to experience New York, residents have started encouraging tourists to partake in “Pickle Tourism.” The trend involves showing pickles to popular destinations, such as the Statue of Liberty, or eating pickles in iconic New York areas, such as the subway.

It appears the trend was started by Grillo’s Pickles as a new marketing campaign for their products. Several of the clips have gone viral as people debate whether pickle tourism is “wholesome” or “cringey.”

Arguably, the most popular Pickle Tourism clip features a boatload of people showing their pickles to the Statue of Liberty. Supportive comments include, “The shot of everyone holding up the pickles is genuine art,” and “This is unironically beautiful. We, as a species, are coming together to accomplish a goal. Pickle.” Many found it heartwarming that everyone on the boat united for one, albeit silly, purpose. However, others pointed out that the individuals in the video appeared to succumb to groupthink. One person wrote, “Bro started a cult,” While someone else shared, “The amount of things people can get a group of humans to do is hilarious.“

Pickle Tourism Is Taking Over New York

Other Pickle Tourism videos include someone handing out pickled items on the subway, and a group of folks dressed up as pickles walking around the streets of New York. The former had people noting that the guy made a mess, spilling pickle juice all over the subway floor. However, the latter will likely become a larger trend around Halloween, as many people expressed a desire to buy a pickle costume themselves.

Over on Reddit, people are discussing the new pickle trend and weighing in on whether it’s brilliant or just plain weird. One person wrote, “This is so cute to me.” However, an anti-pickle Redditor shared, “Why the [expletive] are so many people just like, ‘okay this is normal, let’s do this?’ I’m so confused right now.“

As for those who want to add a unique twist to their New York travel plans, they can join in on the Pickle Tourism concept and see for themselves what all the fuss is about.
