What Eric Adams, the former mayor of New York, intended to be a healthy living promotional post turned out to be interpreted as something sinister. On X, the former mayor posted a shirtless, alleged AI-generated image promoting healthy living.
In the caption, he explained that he was competing with his son to see who would be in better shape by their birthday and that he had a secret weapon: vegetables. Encouraging viewers to take control of their health, Adams shared that although he was 65, he had never been in better shape.
The alleged AI-generated image showed the politician standing in a kitchen wearing just a pair of white shorts and a silver neckpiece, holding a cucumber and red bell pepper in both hands. The caption also shared a story about how the politician almost lost his eyesight to diabetes, but a diet change transformed his life.
As reported by Vice, Adams was featured in a Netflix documentary, “You Are What You Eat: A Twin Experiment,” where he promoted adopting a plant-based diet over diabetes medication, a recommendation rejected by the director and experts. In the documentary, Adams shared that he boycotted the prescribed diabetes medication and treated himself by changing his diet.
However, there appeared to be a conflict with a different version of the story he had told in a 2020 book, where he discussed suffering some symptoms the medications had given him.

The former New York leader’s post sparked intense discussion across the internet filled with ridicule and skepticism. While Adams framed the post as an encouraging message, users stormed the comments with accusations that the image was either an AI-generated creation or an ill-conceived provocative post.
A critic mocked the politician, writing, “Shirtless holding a large cucumber? You’re 65 with the mentality of an 18-year-old. This is why we have 34-year-old Zohran Mamdani.” Accusing Adams of attention-seeking tactics, a user questioned why he selected such a suggestive vegetable for the health campaign instead of simpler options.
Offering a mild comment, a viewer wrote, “You do look good, sir, but why on earth would you post yourself holding a cucumber like that?” Commenting on the unexpected nature of the post, a blunt user stated that no one asked for a shirtless “thirst trap” of the politician. Another user jokingly admitted that the photo looked like an OnlyFans ad at first glance. Some users questioned the authenticity of the image, pointing out various inconsistencies such as the former mayor’s face appearing artificially pasted onto the body.
A last user itemized the absurdity of the post, highlighting the unusual combination of the fruits: “When old people use AI lol, this man just googled an image of a red pepper and was like ‘put this and a cucumber in my hands.’“
Adams may have intended the post to get people talking about vegetables and healthy living, but judging by the responses, his choice to pose shirtless with a cucumber ended up getting considerably more attention than the health message itself.
