Samuel L. Jackson (Nick Fury) recently sat down with Vanity Fair to discuss his upcoming Marvel series, Secret Invasion. During the exclusive interview, Jackson revealed that his character will not wear his signature eyepatch throughout the series. Secret Invasion is an upcoming American television miniseries that will premiere exclusively on Disney+. Samuel L. Jackson will reprise his role as Nick Fury, the former director of S.H.I.E.L.D. who has been working with the Skrulls in deep space. You can check out his official statement below.
Nick Fury Won’t Wear His Signature Eyepatch in Secret Invasion
“He just doesn’t wear the patch. The patch is part of who the strong Nick Fury was,” Jackson says. “It’s part of his vulnerability now. You can look at it and see he’s not this perfectly indestructible person. He doesn’t feel like that guy.”
Secret Invasion was created by Kyle Bradstreet and is based on the Marvel Comics storyline of the same name. The series is obviously intended to take place in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, sharing continuity with the films of the franchise. Kyle Bradstreet will serve as the head writer while also serving as an executive producer alongside Kevin Feige, Louis D’Esposito, Victoria Alonso, and Jonathan Schwartz. The official synopsis for the upcoming series read as follows, Nick Fury uncovers a conspiracy to install shapeshifting Skrull double agents into positions of power around the world. Alongside Jackson, the series will also star along with Ben Mendelsohn as Talos, with Cobie Smulders, Kingsley Ben-Adir, Emilia Clarke, Olivia Colman, Martin Freeman, and Don Cheadle.
Secret Invasion Will Be a Traditional Espionage Story
For those unfamiliar with the Secret Invasion event that took place in the Marvel Comics, it turned out to be a major event in the Marvel Universe. The comic book event involved the Skrulls, a race of shape-shifting aliens, infiltrating the entire Marvel Universe, and masquerading as the heroes in an attempt to conquer Earth. It will be interesting to see how Marvel Studios will implement this storyline into the MCU since the Skrulls were depicted more as refugees trying to find a safe place to call home in Captain Marvel. However, the Skrulls that were shown so far in the MCU doesn’t necessarily represent the entire Skrulls’ alien race. Secret Invasion will be the twenty-second television series in the Marvel Cinematic Universe and the third installment of Phase Five.
The first season will consist of six episodes and is set to premiere on June 21, 2023, exclusively on Disney+.
