If there’s one thing internet sleuths love, it’s reading way too much into everything. Die-hard fans are always ready to dissect any image and information they come across, showing that the smallest changes can ignite massive speculation. This time, a Nintendo fan left no stone unturned as he looked for any hint for the Switch 2 reveal. It seems he has hit a jackpot at something hilariously mundane: an X profile banner.
Reddit user Adrien190303 pointed out that the current Nintendo’s X banner now features an old Mario and Luigi render ‘slapped’ onto a plain white background. Adrien190303 was curious. Why does it reuse a boring image for its official channel instead of promoting a new game like Donkey Kong Country Returns HD?
He then decided to dig deeper, using the Wayback Machine, and uncovered a fascinating coincidence. Or is it?
“They used the same exact banner when they announced the Switch back in October 2016 at 00:30 CEST,” he posted on the r/nintendoswitch 2 subreddit. Naturally, the subreddit loses its mind– at the OP anyway.
“Mario and luigi pointing towards an empty white background signifies that they have absolutely nothing to show or announce,” wrote trantaran. “Thanks nintendo jp!!!”
Many quickly pointed out that said bland banner is the default for the Nintendo Japan account and by no means a Switch 2 reveal teaser.
“They always had this banner for the Japanese account. It’s Americas and other subsidiaries that do change it,” corrects DarkyMcMasterson.
“this is the same exact banner theyve had every day for years now. nintendo jp never changes their banner. stop coping and spreading misinfo,” wrote RubyAlpha.
It’s not particularly surprising that Adrien190303 came to this conclusion. Nintendo Switch 2 reveal speculation has reached critical levels as leaks overflow from various third-party producers and distributors. Since late last year, fans have been theorizing the console will be a shadow-drop during an unannounced, surprise Direct. Even industry analysts are in on the “fun,” saying the company ‘has run out of time‘ to make a proper announcement
Still, someone who used to be really close to this case has something to say about this whole Nintendo Switch 2 reveal hubbub. Krysta Yang, co-founder of Never A Minute Marketing and former Nintendo of America staffer, confirms that Nintendo won’t cave to fan hysteria.
“As wild as these leaks are, Nintendo is going to stick to their plan,” she wrote on X. “They have a date in mind, and they are not budging no matter what.”
In typical Nintendo fashion though, the company is staying silent. Until Nintendo officially breaks its silence, fans will be analyzing every pixel on the ‘net, waiting for the next scrap of Switch 2 news.
