Nintendo Has Officially Apologized for Lying About the Variable Refresh Rate Feature

Slight miscommunication.

Nintendo has clarified that the Nintendo Switch 2 will not support variable refresh rate, aka VRR, in docked mode when it launches on June 5. This comes after previous messaging on Nintendo’s official websites had suggested the feature would be available for both handheld and docked play.

VRR is designed to reduce screen tearing, frame skips, and flickering during gameplay. Nintendo initially listed VRR as a feature for both modes during the Nintendo Switch 2’s April reveal. However, the mention of docked VRR was quietly removed from several regional websites in the following weeks, which raised more than a few doubts about whether the feature would make it into the final product.

Now, Nintendo has confirmed the change. In a statement provided to Nintendo Life, a spokesperson said the Switch 2 will support the variable refresh rate exclusively in handheld mode. They attributed the confusion to incorrect information published on the website, adding, “We apologise for the error.” Which means it is likely not happening until a future hardware refresh of the console.

When asked whether VRR support might be added to docked mode via a future firmware update, the company declined to comment, stating, “We have nothing to announce on this topic.”

The Switch 2 is scheduled to launch globally on June 5. Nintendo has also confirmed that 12 current-generation titles will receive free updates to enable new Switch 2 features at launch. These updates include enhancements for games like Super Mario Odyssey, Pokémon Scarlet & Violet, and The Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom.

Some of these updates will include support for GameShare, a new feature that enables multiplayer gameplay across multiple consoles with just one copy of a supported title. While the lack of VRR in docked mode may be disappointing to some early adopters, Nintendo’s planned updates and new hardware features continue to draw attention ahead of launch.
