Nintendo fans just might be able to switch, their Nintendo Switch. According to a report from The Wall Street Journal, Nintendo plans to release a new version of the Switch next year. The goal for Nintendo is to most likely keep the sales momentum of the console.
Reports of hardware upgrades were confirmed such as upgrading the LCD display of the current Nintendo Switch. If everything goes well, the new version of the Nintendo Switch will be releasing the second half of 2019.
The current sales of the Nintendo Switch aren’t troubling but they are no longer showing extraordinary results since the console’s release in March of 2017. Nintendo expects to sell 20 million units by the end of the fiscal year. Although the sales of the Nintendo Switch have dropped, the console still is the best selling system for the company.
This could also be because of the rise of available games for the console as well. When the console released, there were only a total of 18 games available. Those games include popular titles such as The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild and Shovel Knight: Treasure Trove.
Now the console has become a powerhouse for gaming by including more popular titles that were a hit on the Xbox One and PlayStation 4. Titles like Dark Souls and DragonBall Fighter Z will most likely make the Nintendo Switch more popular.
Since its release, the Switch has sold over 19 million units. And releasing different models for more sales isn’t a new strategy from Nintendo. This can be confirmed with the case of the Gameboy Advance evolving to a sleeker and foldable option, the Gameboy Advance SP.
In recent years, there have been slighter changes and enhancements to the same model rather than Nintendo creating a whole new system. The Nintendo DS to the Nintendo DS Lite is a good example. The Nintendo DS was bulky and bigger than the lighter and brighter, Nintendo DS Lite. Another example is the Nintendo DSi to the Nintendo DSi XL. Obviously, screen size was a big factor during this remodel.
We can definitely speculate that the Nintendo Switch’s sales won’t be plummeting anytime soon. Especially considering the upcoming releases of games like Pokemon Let’s Go, Eveee and Let’s Go, Pikachu! Not to mention the new Smash Bros Ultimate as well.
