Rules or no rules?

Maryland Sen. Chris Van Hollen warned that the Clarity Act does nothing about crypto “bad actors” as the Senate returns. Online replies pushed back, saying the measure should be amended, not killed.

Sen. Chris Van Hollen of Maryland posted on X that Senate Democrats blocked the Clarity Act in August and that the crypto industry and Republican allies will try again when the Senate returns this week. According to the post, the bill does nothing to stop what he called “Trump’s crypto corruption” or crypto use by bad actors, and he urged that it not pass. Online users reacted after the warning, with many replies arguing that blocking the measure would be worse than passing it.

In August, we stopped the Clarity Act, but when the Senate returns this week the crypto industry & their Republican flunkies in Congress will try again.

As is, this bill does nothing to stop Trump's crypto corruption or the use of crypto by bad actors.

— Senator Chris Van Hollen (@ChrisVanHollen) September 13, 2026

In the clip, he calls the Clarity Act “a piece of legislation” and says industry backers’ “number one concern is to pass the CLARITY Act,” while describing “super PAC money around the country trying to elect” candidates. He says the measure is being presented “as a way to create good regulation and protection,” then argues “it has a huge conflict of interest problem” and that President Trump “has been cashing in on his crypto corruption.”

Van Hollen also says “crypto has become the currency of choice” and that some actors do “all their transactions or a lot of their transactions” “for illicit finance through these crypto platforms.” He closes by saying Congress should not serve “the special interests of the crypto industry.”

The footage is a prepared statement and does not show a Senate floor vote or debate. In the caption, Van Hollen wrote that Democrats “stopped the Clarity Act” in August and that “when the Senate returns this week the crypto industry & their Republican flunkies in Congress will try again.”

He added that, “as is, this bill does nothing to stop Trump’s crypto corruption or the use of crypto by bad actors,” and said, “We can’t let this pass.” Those claims about the bill’s effects have not been independently confirmed in the post.

How Viewers Are Responding to Van Hollen’s Clarity Act Warning

Some users said blocking the bill would be worse than passing it. One wrote, “You either think Americans are idiots or you have no clue. No Clarity Act is the worst possible outcome.” Another said, “If the bill is insufficient, strengthen it. Don’t sabotage it.”

Others argued the fight was about technology and elections, not only Trump. One commenter said, “You are on the wrong side of history,” adding, “This is NOT about Trump, its about the future of tech in the US.” A Maryland user wrote, “I’m in your state and I won’t be voting for you.”

Several replies focused on the comment thread itself and on Van Hollen’s Trump remarks. One asked, “you do notice ALL of the responses to you are negative?” Another wrote, “Why is your corruption ok, but Trump’s isn’t?”

A further commenter said a “no” vote “means Trump can continue with his crypto in investments and there are no rules for crypto.”

It remains unclear whether the Senate will take up the Clarity Act again this week. The clip continues to circulate as users debate Van Hollen’s warning and the replies it drew.
