A school superintendent in North Carolina is facing backlash online after comments in which he defended the presence of an LGBTQ+ themed book in an elementary school library, including imagery that some critics described as inappropriate.
At a meeting, an official confronted the school superintendent about materials available in elementary school libraries. The official claimed that a book depicting two men “making out” while wearing BDSM clothing was accessible in some schools and questioned whether this should be permitted. “You got guys in kink outfits,” he added, pressing the superintendent on the appropriateness of the content.
In response, the superintendent stated that he was not certain what he was being shown or referred to. The official pushed back, saying, “But you’re okay with kindergartners looking at,” and continued pressing the issue. He added, “Is this your goal? Is this what you want kindergartners through fourth grade… I mean is this the goal? Is this the curriculum?”
The superintendent then defended the content, saying he did not see an issue with what was being shown in the book. “I don’t understand what the challenge is. I see a pride flag.” He then added, “I see community. I see two couples who appear to be in a loving relationship. They’re not breaking any laws. They’re not hurting anyone,” he argued. He added that it was “certainly” something a child might encounter in their community. Despite his explanation, many viewers remained outraged and continued to criticize the situation.
The superintendent’s response did not satisfy the official. The official then responded sharply, saying, “Children are being subjected to this filth. If this is a hell you wanna die on, the democrats wanna die on, indoctrinating young children, I wish you the very best. You’re on the wrong side of history.” The exchange quickly circulated online and became highly controversial, with viewers strongly divided over the discussion and the broader issue of what material is appropriate for elementary school students.

[Expletive]!” Others criticized the broader discussion around the issue, with another commenter saying, “It’s almost comical how ignorant these educators are!”
