Seeing one’s home come under the sway of opposing political forces can be disheartening, and one man from North Carolina finds things so overbearing that he longs to leave the state. Going by Thedraco13 on Reddit, the man posted to r/NorthCarolina, saying that he really wanted to leave. “NC doesn’t feel like home anymore, with the way the state has been run into the ground by the NCGOP I feel like it gets worse every year,” Thedraco13 wrote.
The issue for Thedraco13 is that he doesn’t have anywhere to go besides North Carolina, not to mention that his family has been living in the state since the 1700s. That said, this resident asked r/NorthCarolina whether he should stick it out or move to a place that better aligns with his political beliefs. Unfortunately, the internet believes he shouldn’t be going anywhere anytime soon.
Reddit Urges the North Carolina Man to Stay
One person challenged Thedraco13, saying that if they wanted a blue state, they should go to California; otherwise, they should stay in North Carolina to “make a difference.” Over a thousand like-minded people upvoted another comment telling OP to stay: “Any correction from the current regressive trajectory is going to need all the progressive-minded young people to stay and vote early and often.”
“People really underestimate just how close these elections can get. Every vote matters in NC,” remarked another commenter in response. A third user pointed out how the opposite is happening in blue states, where conservatives are moving from their home to red states because of politics.
As the commenter explained, “The current situation with Republican legislators gerrymandering and messing with maps, NC may shift further and further to the Right for the foreseeable future, as liberals and left-leaning who are even willing to stay in NC, won’t be willing to move to more rural areas to make up for it.” This isn’t the answer OP might want to hear in a post about wanting to move away, but many believe this to be the truth.
Countless others shared a collective, encouraging sentiment: North Carolina is “a place worth fighting for.” As to whether Thedraco13 is up to patiently sticking things out and not moving, he replied, saying, “My wife and I got two more good years in us.” Whether that’s long enough for change to happen, only time will tell. But as those on r/NorthCarolina say, no one should be willing to give up on their home state so easily yet.
