A Washington gamer says he thought he “found his new favorite retro game store.” But what happened after he went to pay for his purchases made him change his mind. Suddenly, an offhand comment left him feeling judged, and now he says he won’t be taking his business there.

Taylor (@nostalgiawithtaylor) loves games of all kinds and found a new retro game shop in Washington. He thought it would be his new favorite store because of all the cool things he saw there. However, he felt the vibes were off from the very start. When he went to the counter to pay for his items, the cashier said something shocking. He asked Taylor, “You’re wearing a PlayStation hat and a Nintendo 64 hoodie?” He then stated, “You can’t do that, dude.”

I thought I found my new favorite retro game store… until I had an experience I honestly didn’t expect. Here’s the full story of what happened at this retro gaming shop and why I left feeling completely different about the place. If you love retro games, gaming nostalgia, collecting video games, and visiting local game stores, you’ll want to hear this one. #retrogaming #storytime #nostalgia #2000s #retrogaming

When Taylor said he liked both PlayStation and Nintendo 64, the guy acted visibly offended. Taylor felt like the cashier was telling him he wasn’t permitted to like both these gaming consoles. On top of that, Taylor said he called upon a second co-worker, who was “clowning” on him for his outfit, too! Humiliated in front of the customers, Taylor decided he wasn’t going to buy from them. He said it was unacceptable to leave him walking out of a store with “tears in his eyes” because of how they treated him.

Taylor tells his audience that he feels like people gatekeep what people can enjoy in the gaming community, down to Pokémon. He adds, “Hobbies now just suck. The people in the community just suck.” On top of that, Taylor says it’s hard making friends as a millennial when people tend to act this way. From his point of view, he doesn’t think they were joking and, if they were, he didn’t find it to be humorous.

Commenters reacted to Taylor’s video, with many showing him support after his negative experience. One commenter stated, “They’re jealous of your whimsy my friend.” Another added, “I’m sorry you went through that man. There’s definitely nothing wrong with liking multiple brands. Those employees were weird.” One commenter mentioned, “Please don’t be embarrassed. If anything, THEY should be embarrassed.” Commenters continue to show their support for Taylor and others who enjoy retro games of all types.
