A theft incident in NYC is gaining attention online for how bizarre and unexpectedly comical it is. A man had left his electric scooter locked outside a hospital to attend a doctor’s appointment, only to return and find it stolen, with the thief leaving him nothing but the chain. However, unbeknownst to the thief, the scooter had a tracker, and the owner was not about to let him get away with it.
“I see where you at,” the man said in a video that was later reposted to X. “You drove from 114th in front of Mount Sinai Hospital all the way to the Bronx… The scooter has not moved. The scooter logo is on top of your building.”
Using the tracker, the man was able to locate the scooter, which had been taken from Harlem to the Bronx. When he got there, he found it locked to a pole on a sidewalk. Although the person who took it was nowhere to be found, it appeared they had taken the extra step of securing it, seemingly to prevent anyone else from stealing it.
After calling the police, the man went to take a closer look at his scooter and noticed that the ignition wire had been cut. He also tried to turn on the vehicle, but it would not start. “Usually, when the scooter completely dies, that number doesn’t appear,” he said, referring to the scooter’s display. “So I don’t know if they did something to it or if it’s just dead.”
Officers eventually arrived at the scene and helped cut the lock off the scooter, allowing the man to take it back.
Netizens React to the NYC Theft Incident
Netizens on X were largely amused by the incident, especially the irony of the thief securing the stolen scooter. One person wrote, “The new owner even protected it from getting stolen😂😂😂😂.” Another joked about the distance it had been taken, “Wild Bro rode da scooter to da BX 🤣😂.” A third said, “The guy that stole it prob upstairs watchin yall do all that.” A fourth added, “Sharing is caring.”
Some people were also disappointed that they did not get to see the individual behind the theft, with one netizen saying, “I wanted to see who took it,” and another commenting, “I would like to have waited to see who it was.”
A few others, however, were more critical of the situation and shifted the conversation to politics. “Democrat cities are so far out of control,” one X user remarked. Someone else said, “Hopefully the thief was arrested. But being the wonderful liberal city of New York, I wouldn’t hold my breath.”
As of the time of writing, the video has gained over 100,000 views, and there has been no update on whether the NYC thief was ever caught.
