The Star Wars prequels were a huge disappointment, there is no disputing that. But if there was ever any silver lining, it was Ewan Mcgregor’s performance as you Obi-Wan Kenobi. After years of fans begging for a spin off for his character, it seems our prayers have finally been answered.
According to an exclusive report from Hollywood Reporter, an Obi-Wan Kenobi stand alone film is in the works. Their sources state that the project is in the earliest stages of production and that it doesn’t even have a script, but it is indeed a thing.
The Obi-wan stand alone would take place outside of the original trilogy. The only timeframe that would make sense to focus on would be the time period between Revenge of the Sith and A New Hope.
There is no doubt that the only reason this movie is being made because of the success of not only The Force Awakens, but more importantly Rogue One: A Star Wars Story. The success of the spinoff proved that standalone films in the franchise can be just as profitable as the trilogies. So much so that a Han Solo film is already well into production, and movies about Yoda and Bounty Hunter Boba Fett are also being discussed as well.
Oscar-nominated filmmaker Stephen Daldry is in early talks for the film, but there has been no word on whether Ewan Mcgregor will return as the Jedi Master. Since Revenge of the Sith, the actor has done a number of supporting roles in films, even returning for a small cameo (aka reusing his voice) in The Force Awakens.
I can’t imagine that the film could star anyone but Mcgregor in all honesty, as fans would likely riot if it didn’t. Either way it’s nice to know that the film is actually being made after all these years.
