A disturbing video from Cleveland, Ohio, is sparking outrage after a white woman was caught on camera trying to walk away with a Black woman’s purse inside a public restroom.
The original poster, who uploaded the clip under the username @la___toyyaa, explained the tense backstory. She had taken her autistic brother to the bathroom along with her grandmother. After quickly setting her purse on the floor near a stall, a white woman picked it up and insisted, “You forgot something.” At first, the poster was confused, asking if it was her phone and even double-checking with her grandmother. Then she noticed the woman had her purse slung over her arm as if it was her own.
When confronted with “That’s my purse,” the woman refused to hand it back and instead created a scene, allegedly attempting to paint the rightful owner as the thief.
The video picks up in the middle of the confrontation. The is filming, while the mother can be heard demanding her bag back, saying, “You can see the ID.” The woman snaps back, “Well get the ID out,” before the purse is finally retrieved. In the background, the husband of the victim tries to de-escalate, politely asking the woman to let his wife have her purse and wishing her a “nice day.”
But his calm tone hides a harsher reality. He quickly urges his family to leave, stating, “There’s too many of them and not enough of us.” The heartbreaking comment underscores the family’s fear that as Black people in a predominantly white area, they could be unfairly profiled or even treated as aggressors despite being the actual victims.
The husband’s instinct was to protect his family from a situation that could spiral once authority figures or bystanders got involved. The wife, meanwhile, was understandably furious, wanting accountability for a woman who not only grabbed her belongings but also tried to flip the narrative in a racially charged way.
The viral clip has since spread beyond TikTok to Reddit, where users debated the troubling racial dynamics at play. Some commenters highlighted the exhausting reality of being Black in spaces where even defending your own property can be twisted against you. Others pointed out that the woman already had another purse, making her actions even more suspicious.
One Reddit user summarized the mood perfectly:
“It’s heartbreaking to hear him acknowledge that even though they were in the right, they were still in danger from a Karen weaponizing staff or cops. Those kids are going to be raised in that world.”
