A woman working at a food bank in Ohio shared some of the items that are usually rejected after they are donated. Not only did she share rusted and even expired cans, but also a half-eaten peanut butter container, to the internet’s shock.
The woman in question, known as celloplayer219 or Becorelle (Bec), shared the items on TikTok. She often shares a variety of content, including clips revolving around her job at the food bank. This clip in particular went viral, becoming her most popular one, garnering 566,300 views, 56,000 likes, and more than 1,000 comments.
The Ohio woman picked some rejected donation items that the food bank selects and throws out during the sorting process. The first item was instant oatmeal, which didn’t come with its original label or had any nutritional information. These types of items are usually rejected because they could lead to allergic reactions.
Then, Bec showed a can with a 2021 expiration date. It was followed by a rusted can, a puffed-up one, which means bacterial presence, and even a dented one.
However, the most egregious example was a peanut butter container she saved for last. While it looked normal from the outside, Bec opened it up and revealed that it was half-eaten.
To demonstrate how easy something like the peanut butter could be missed, she compared a full one with the one she showed before in a follow-up clip. Both containers looked identical at first glance. To Bec’s credit, she believed that this confusion could explain why the donor decided to leave a half-eaten peanut butter by mistake.
People Outraged By Donated Items
A group of viewers couldn’t fathom people donating items such as the ones described above. One said, “My biggest pet peeve is when people use donations as a pantry clean-out. If you don’t want to eat it, why would anyone else?” Another one commented, “I’m gonna tell myself that the peanut butter made it in by mistake.”
Other viewers, meanwhile, shared the sad state of other food banks. One person wrote, “Our food bank pretty much only gives out expired food.” Another one added, “Unfortunately, my local food bank gives single packaged foods.”
In another follow-up clip, Bec explained that she believes that these items are donated with no malicious intent.
