After moving into a new apartment in Oklahoma, a woman became quite concerned after a mysterious mark appeared on her door a few days after her arrival. It had been spray-painted with white paint in the shape of a “y,” with no explanation left behind as to its meaning. Her friend, who goes by Legitimate_Ad7089 on Reddit, shared photos of the door’s strange graffiti on r/whatis, where hundreds shared their thoughts and concerns over whether the woman was in danger.
Legitimate_Ad7089 prefaced his post by saying that his post isn’t intentionally racist; he’s simply “genuinely concerned” about his friend’s safety. He continued explaining, pointing out how his friend is a white female who moved into a “complex that has predominantly black residents.” He added that no other doors in the neighborhood have such a symbol, which is why he found it quite alarming.
Needless to say, there are plans to inform apartment management about the mysterious marking. Still, Legitimate_Ad7089 believes that whoever spraypainted the door has malicious intent because his friend lives alone and is the only white resident in the complex besides a “white lady in another building who is married to a black man.” While many agreed that the symbol meant trouble, many others believed the man and his friend might be overreacting.
“Ask her neighbors? Perfect time to get to know them. Seriously. Maybe people were camping in it before or using it for something?” suggested a commenter, with thousands of Redditors upvoting in support of the idea. “It’s obvious, they know you’re white,” another remarked in response to someone claiming that a black neighborhood doesn’t need a “sign” to know someone is white in their community.
Racial Debate Aside, Redditors Believe the Marking Still Could Mean Trouble
Others chimed in, saying how it could be a warning symbol to prevent squatters or homeless people from entering the house. While the majority of commenters did their best to quell any irrational fears OP and his friend might have, a good handful were still concerned that random graffiti doesn’t just appear on someone’s home without good reason.
“Yeah I’d paint over/ remove that as soon as possible. It’s either nothing or nothing good,” wrote a Reddit user. “My level of concern would be commiserate with the crime statistics of the area she moved to,” added a second. A third accused OP and his friend of being lowkey racist because they believe the neighborhood’s predominant ‘skin color’ has something to do with the marking as opposed to general curiosity.
Whatever the case, the landlord or property manager is evidently the best person to speak to about a mysterious marking freshly sprayed on a newcomer’s door. Though the assumptions and comments about race made by both OP and plenty of the commenters say quite a lot about the conclusions many people jump to in today’s society when it comes to neighborhood-related concerns.
