Playing an MMO of any kind requires a lot of time and dedication. Time that only those who don’t have full-time jobs or children have. One Reddit user noted that when playing Final Fantasy XIV, it seemed like they were the only minor in the entire server. The others in their Free Company would often talk about things such as picking up their kids from school or coming home from work exhausted. While I sympathize with those users, it must be frustrating for a kid who just wants to play the game with people their age.
Final Fantasy XIV Is Full of Grown-Ups
In my experience, it does seem like more adults are playing the game than children. This is likely because a paid subscription service is required to play. That’s not to say that minors can’t pay the $14.99 USD per month. However, I remember trying to get my mom to pay for a subscription to Club Penguin back when that was popular. She wasn’t too happy and gave me a stern talking-to about spending money online. Other users also confess this as the reason why it took so long to get into an MMO in the first place. The most upvoted comment talks about how those who were fans of MMOs during the golden age of the genre are all older.
the golden age of mmos was like 20 years ago. so anyone who played them then is now grown up and still plays them.”

I can’t help but agree that this is true when you consider when the most popular MMOs of all time were originally released. It’s also interesting to consider that the original Final Fantasy XIV launched in 2010. That would mean that those who have stuck with it from the beginning are also adults now. Eventually, the same kids who say that more adults are playing than children will be adults themselves playing through the same game.
Final Fantasy XIV is available on PlayStation and PC.
