Hulu’s hit series Only Murders in the Building has officially been renewed for a third season. News of the show’s renewal comes only weeks after the debut of its second season on June 28th; however, Hulu executives have attributed the quick decision to Only Murders in the Building being one of the platform’s highest-earning shows and the acting of the show’s three main leads.

Only Murders in the Building is a crime-comedy that centers around three unlikely friends: semi-retired actor Charles-Haden Savage (Steve Martin), struggling Broadway director Oliver Putnam (Martin Short), and renovator Mabel Mora (Selena Gomez. The trio, all residents of an apartment building called the Arconia, initially bond over their shared love of true crime podcasts and then come together once more to solve the murder of fellow resident Tim Kono (Julian Cihi) in the show’s first season, which premiered on Hulu in August 2021.
Charles, Oliver, and Mabel, upon deciding to solve Tim’s murder, begin a true-crime podcast of their own, calling it Only Murders in the Building; upon successfully solving the murder, the trio finds themselves unwittingly launched into a whole new investigation in the second season of the show – Arconia board president Bunny Folger has been murdered, and they’re the prime suspects.
Why ‘Only Murders’ Season 3 Has Been Renewed So Quickly
The second season of Only Murders in the Building hasn’t been concluded yet, with the next episode coming to Hulu on July 12th and the season finale being released on August 23rd. Still, Hulu has announced today that the show has been renewed for a third season – although the decision may seem presumptuous, Only Murders in the Building does hold the distinction of being the most-watched comedy series in Hulu’s history, according to Deadline, as well as being considered a favorite in several Emmy nomination categories.
Hulu Originals president Craig Erwich has even called the show the “crown jewel of our slate,” stating that “Its appeal across generations, the intersection of humor and heart, and its truly original approach are a hallmark of and testament to Dan [Fogelman], John [Hoffman], Steve, Marty and Selena’s work.”
Regarding the renewal of Only Murders in the Building season 3, show creator John Hoffman told The Hollywood Reporter that he wanted to “up the stakes for our three, who had stepped in it so badly by the end of season one, and now everything was about, ‘How do we even begin to deal with this situation?’”
Only Murders in the Building is produced by John Hoffman, Steve Martin, Martin Short, Selena Gomez, Dan Fogelman, and Jess Rosenthal. A release date for Only Murders in the Building season 3 on Hulu has not been announced yet.
