We were all getting ready for the release of Outlast 2 this fall, but the developer Red Barrels Games has crushed our dreams. They announced yesterday that Outlast 2 will not be launching at the end of 2016 as previously expected. Instead, the game is now on track for an early 2017 release.
Red Barrels stated on their Facebook page that:
Our mission as an indie studio is to deliver to you the best, most terrifying, most fulfilling experiences possible. That’s why we’re taking just a little bit more time to make sure our vision for Outlast 2 is in no way compromised and is the experience you deserve. This is not the type of new we ever want to deliver, but we are so fully committed to the world we’ve built and to our awesome community that we could no, in good conscience release a game who’s limits haven’t been tested to the extreme.
What a nice way to soften the blow, Red Barrels. In all seriousness, though, they have also said that this decision was not an easy one for them to make.
Outlast 2 is the sequel to the hugely popular game, Outlast. While there is not a wide amount of information available about the game yet, we do know that you play as cameraman, Blake Langermann, who works alongside his wife, Lynn. They are both investigative journalists and take huge risks to go deep and uncover stories that no one else will take. Blake’s newest investigation begins with the murder of a pregnant woman simply named Jane Doe; and from there the search takes Blake to the deserts of Arizona, “to a darkness so deep that no one could shed light upon it, and a corruption so profound that going mad may be the only sane thing to do.” Well, sign me right up.
There are several videos of people playing Outlast 2, and it looks terrifying. Seeing these videos have only made fans more eager to get their hands on the game. Despite its unfortunate delay, Red Barrels promises that Outlast will still “scare the crap out of you”. With this new release window, that is a lot of horror happening in early 2017, since the next installment in the Resident Evil franchise, Resident Evil 7: Biohazard, is coming out that last week of January. Outlast 2 was among the most highly anticipated games launching in the fall, and while this delay is disappointing, it ensures that they get everything right and deliver a quality survival horror game.
