New York Rep. Hakeem Jeffries posted a video accusing Attorney General Todd Blanche and the Justice Department of working to undermine a free and fair election. In the clip, filmed in front of election-related banners, Jeffries referred to Blanche as a “so-called Attorney General” and said the department’s “political hacks” were out of control. Online users reacted after the post, with many accusing Jeffries of hypocrisy and mockingly referring to him as “Temu Obama.” The comments focused on past Democratic use of the Justice Department under the previous administration.
In the clip, Jeffries stands in front of large banners reading “VOTE!” and “ELECTION DAY IS NOV 3.” He states, “Todd Blanch, the so-called Attorney General, is a political hack and a corrupt pettifogger.” He continues that “this guy is doing everything in his power to stop this election from being free and fair,” before saying House Democrats have assembled “the largest voter protection effort in modern American history” so that “it’s the American people who get to decide who represents you in Congress, not Donald Trump and his MAGA extremist cartel.” The video does not show any specific DOJ action or response from Blanche.
According to the accompanying post text, Jeffries wrote that the “so-called Attorney General Todd Blanche and the political hacks at the Justice Department are out of control,” that Democrats “are fighting their corrupt effort to undermine a free and fair election and they are failing,” and that “every single one of these far-right extremists will be held accountable.”
The remarks come after Blanche declined to fully rule out DOJ involvement in hypothetical election certification scenarios and after the department filed a lawsuit related to Alaska’s Senate ballot.
These steps have been described by the Justice Department as efforts to ensure only eligible voters participate, while Democratic leaders, including Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, have characterized similar actions as attempts to interfere with the election.
Online and Public Responses to the Remarks
Some X users rejected Jeffries’ claims and accused him of hypocrisy. One wrote, “We saw what Democrats did with the DOJ under the Biden administration, and we know what you’ll do if Democrats return to power. Spare us your lies.”
Another said, “THE ONES WHO CHEAT, CRY THE LOUDEST!!” A third mocked him with, “Temu Obama has entered the chat. Same packaging, 90% less charisma,” while a fourth commented, “So-called Hakeem and his weird Democrats are trying to make us think voter fraud is a good thing.”
Others expressed support for the broader concern about Justice Department actions ahead of the election. Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer wrote, “As Trump and his cronies attempt to steal this election, we are fighting them at every turn.” He added, “Our elections must always belong to the voters, not Donald Trump.” Another added, “These far-right extremists must be held to account.”
For now, Jeffries’ remarks form one more exchange in the ongoing debate over the Justice Department’s role ahead of the midterms. Online discussion continues to reflect differing views on whether the claims point to real interference or reflect familiar partisan friction.
