Outriders, the upcoming RPG shooter from publisher Square Enix, just received a new release date trailer. The game had a launch window of Holiday 2020 before COVID-19. Now though, it has a definitive release date of February 2, 2021. The mostly cinematic trailer showcases the game’s evolutionary nature when it comes to characters and gameplay. People Can Fly, the studio responsible for Gears of War: Judgment and Bulletstorm, is developing Outriders. Square Enix revealed the title at E3 2019 while People Can Fly revealed it would be coming to both current and next-gen consoles in February. However, this release date trailer brought other exciting information as well. The game will support full cross-play compatibility across all platforms. Players who purchase Outriders on PlayStation 4 or Xbox One will be able to upgrade to the next-gen version for free. In the official press release, Co-Head of Studio at Square Enix External Studios. Jon Brooke. had this to say:
We’re very happy to announce that we can offer full cross-play support and a free next-gen upgrade plan for Outriders players. The great thing about this system is that even if you’re not picking up your PS5 or XSX quite yet, we’ve got you covered and there’s no need to wait. If you buy the current-gen version of Outriders, we’ll give you the next-gen version for free.”
Outriders follows a group of humans attempting to colonize the alien planet Enoch. While searching for a mysterious signal, the player will be caught in an energy storm called “The Anomaly”. This storm will grant superpowers to the player and the citizens of Enoch. As the above trailer states, survival demands aggression. It supports single-player or co-op with up to 2 other players.
The game releases on February 2nd, 2021 for PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X, Xbox One, and PC. It will be available on Google Stadia later in 2021.
