We all know everyone’s favorite talking monkey scientist in Overwatch, Winston was raised on the moon, but now players will get to play there. Right on the heels of Overwatch one year anniversary Blizzard release a preview trailer for their newest assault map called Horizon Lunar Colony.
We get our first look at Winston’s former home in the Overwatch short titled Recall when the scientist reminisces about his life growing up. Raised by Dr. Harold Winston – the man he got his name from – the short is filled with cute scenes between the two, as Winston learns to be human, assist Harold with his science experiments, and most importantly, eats a lot of peanut butter.
But anyone who knows Overwatch lore knows that the Lunar Colony did not end well. The other gorillas at the colony with Winston – who were being kept test subjects to study the effect of long-term life in space – revolted, killing the humans.
It’s implied that Dr. Winston was among the casualties, while Winston the Monkey escaped to earth and joined Overwatch. So alongside the introduction of the new map, lore-wise this is the first contact between the base and Earth (or people from Earth) since the uprising.
Like other maps, Horizon Lunar Colony will let players explore Winson’s old home and will be filled with plenty of easter eggs, similar to Genji’s bedroom in the Nepal temple. While Horizon is purely an Assault map now, there could be more content related to the Lunar base in the future, from 3 v 3’s to capture the flag.
The new map also hints at a possible new character as well, which isn’t surprising considering how Overwatch loves to lace its maps and content with hints of new characters. In the trailer, a specimen named Hammond is listed as missing, which has led many to believe that a new character could be coming soon.
The newest Overwatch map is playable today on PC in PTR! For more information be sure to check back to the site for more Overwatch updates, as well as all of your other Nerdy News and Needs!
