Leaked text messages from Pennsylvania Senator John Fetterman reveal remarks on domestic policy and federal documents. The communications show him challenging Democratic reactions to a fatal Minneapolis police shooting and drawing comparisons to Wisconsin unrest. Fetterman cast the sole Democratic vote against an Iran War Powers Resolution.
New York Magazine obtained the messages, which surfaced amid staff concerns over Fetterman’s increasingly conservative political alignment. Last May, some current and former staffers voiced concerns to the magazine that the senator was at times erratic and manic. Fetterman dismissed those reports as complaints from disgruntled former employees.
Fetterman responded to a news article detailing typical family healthcare costs by asking his staff, “How should it cost? Free? I don’t understand what affordability it is.” Regarding delayed federal document releases, the senator messaged, “Epstein was a nothing burger. Worst pics I’ve seen were from Clinton lol.” He further challenged Democratic opposition to the fatal police shooting of nurse Alex Pretti, texting, “Kyle Rittenhouse brought a gun to a protest. Why are now democrats defending the nurse it was legal to carry. Both legal weapons. Square that.”
Rittenhouse shot three men—two fatally—during the 2020 Kenosha unrest, and a court found him not guilty, while the Hennepin County Medical Examiner’s Office determined Pretti’s killing constituted a homicide.
Backlash Grows Over Leaked Fetterman Messages
The leaked conversations quickly generated criticism from Democratic voters and online observers following the publication of the messages discussing healthcare affordability and political violence.
“Fetterman should be reminded for the rest of his days, that he is a fraud to the very campaign that got him elected,” one constituent wrote. Another observer replied, “He set the bar on the floor for a career of selfishness and I cannot wait for his [expletive] to be replaced.”
“Why yes, [expletive], it should be free. Like in all other developed countries,” a resident argued. Another commenter wrote, “Take it exactly at face value. He doesn’t understand.”
One person noted, “Kyle Rittenhouse didn’t just ‘bring a gun,’ he actually killed people.” A community member added, “This take to compare the two is so insane.”
An observer wrote, “The only brain injury responsible for this is the blow to his ego.” They added, “He needs to step down, and every state needs provisions in their constitutions to quickly and efficiently recall their federal legislators.”
The leaked messages leave unresolved questions about Fetterman’s alignment with Democratic legislative priorities and his future within the party.
