A hairstylist in Pennsylvania has gone viral after a video circulated online showing her dealing with an unhappy client who became upset during an interaction related to being misgendered.
It was assumed online that the client may be a transgender woman based on the interaction, as she became upset after the hairstylist referred to her as a man. The hairstylist then apologized for the mistake after realizing the client’s concern, and the situation escalated into a tense exchange that was later shared widely online.
The viral video showed what appeared to be a tense moment as the client remained visibly dissatisfied following the incident. When the client responded with an attitude toward the hairstylist, she attempted to de-escalate the situation, saying, “Calm down. I’m talking to you. I’m not talking at you,” in an effort to lower the tension during the exchange.
The hairstylist then said the client was being passive-aggressive during the exchange. “I made a mistake. I apologized,” she said, referring to the earlier misgendering incident. She continued trying to calm the situation and de-escalate the tension as the interaction remained heated.
Instead of calming down, the client continued arguing that the hairstylist had done something wrong. The hairstylist responded by staying composed, reiterating that she had made a mistake but that it could be corrected. She added that there was no need for the client to take an aggressive tone. She also said that she had noticed the client rolling her eyes multiple times during the interaction.
The hairstylist continued to explain that she was there to do her job and wanted to move past the incident. She reiterated that she had already apologized for referring to the client as a “boy.” This was the initial cause of the conflict. “All we can do is move forward,” she added calmly as she tried to keep the situation from escalating further.
Apparently, the client was also filming the appointment and streaming it live. Her followers were allegedly criticizing the hairstylist in real time, which the stylist said was disrupting her “peace” during the appointment. When the hairstylist pointed out the online backlash being directed at her, the client responded, “I can’t control them.”
At this point in the exchange, the hairstylist continued trying to de-escalate the misunderstanding. The client said, “I can’t really control my emotions,” to which the hairstylist responded that she respected that. The client also said, “I have a resting [expletive] face.” She then added that she did not intend to be “nasty” toward the hairstylist. The video ended with the hairstylist still calmly explaining her intentions and attempting to keep the situation under control. Following the clip’s circulation online, many users appeared to side with the hairstylist, focusing more on her effort to de-escalate the situation than on the initial misgendering incident.
Support for Pennsylvania Hairstylist Following Tense Moment
The video sparked reactions online. Many viewers supported the hairstylist in Pennsylvania and argued that she did nothing wrong in how she handled the situation. Some of the comments made in response were also described as transphobic, particularly those discussing the client’s gender in a derogatory or speculative way rather than focusing on the incident itself. One person wrote, “Yes this is a full grown man and she had to deescalate for her safety can you imagine what that enormous individual is capable of?” Another commenter added, “That’s IT, she’s in real danger and so few really get it.”
Others praised the hairstylist for how she managed the situation. One person wrote, “The hairstylist handed her crown tight and kept it respectful and professional.” However, some viewers felt the client’s reaction was understandable, with one commenter saying, “How do you misgender someone and get made that they are mad? It’s ha bday. You literally ruinin ha bday. ‘What are your pronouns?’ Is not a difficult question. Especially if you’re trying to make some money.”
The video proved to be controversial online, dividing viewers over the interaction, though the majority of opinions appeared to be in favor of the hairstylist and her handling of the situation.
